A fascinating event is set to take place in Leeds this weekend, showcasing a remarkable piece of history and mathematics. The City of Maths has brought a full-scale reconstruction of the Venn Bowling Machine to the city, a 7ft cricket bowling machine originally invented by the mathematician John Venn over a century ago. This unique initiative aims to inspire young minds and engage the public in the wonders of maths and engineering.

What Is the Venn Bowling Machine?

The Venn Bowling Machine is not just any ordinary cricket bowling machine; it has a rich history linked to the invention of the famous Venn diagram, which helps illustrate how different groups or sets relate to each other. Engineers from the University of Cambridge have meticulously recreated this machine using historic photographs and patent records, ensuring that its original design and function are preserved. This giant machine serves as both an educational tool and a fun attraction for the community.

Hands-On Learning for Local Pupils

This week, hundreds of pupils from local schools, including Rosebank Primary School and Richmond Hill Academy, have had the opportunity to participate in special workshops. These sessions allow students to build their own miniature versions of the Venn Bowling Machine, where they can explore concepts such as angles and distances while having fun. The hands-on approach helps bring mathematics to life, demonstrating how it plays a vital role in everyday activities, such as sports.

Public Event Details

This exciting event will be open to the public on Friday, 19th June, and Saturday, 20th June, between 11am and 4pm at Cookridge Street in Leeds city centre (outside the Radisson Blu Hotel). Visitors will have the chance to see the giant Venn Bowling Machine up close and even operate miniature versions of it. Participants will test their bowling skills by attempting to launch balls into buckets, making for an entertaining and educational experience for all ages.

Why It Matters

The initiative is part of Leeds' two-year City of Maths programme, which celebrates the city being recognised as the UK's first City of Maths for 2026 and 2027. This programme aims to promote mathematics in engaging and creative ways, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Dr Ruth Holland, Head of Maths and Schools for City of Maths, said:

"John Venn is known around the world for his famous diagrams, but his bowling machine reveals another side of his personality – inventive, playful and endlessly curious. These workshops and events give people the chance to experience mathematics in a completely different way, combining history, sport, engineering and hands-on problem-solving. We're delighted to be working with the University of Cambridge to bring this remarkable story to Leeds."

Community Engagement and Partnerships

The collaboration between the City of Maths and the University of Cambridge exemplifies how partnerships can foster educational opportunities within the community. By bringing together local schools and higher education institutions, the programme not only enhances learning but also encourages students to consider future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
