Start Up Loans Programme Injects Over £5 Million into Hull's Entrepreneurial Landscape

Welcome to Yorkshire

The British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme has made a significant impact on the entrepreneurial landscape in Hull, injecting over £5 million into the local start-up business community since its launch. This funding has been delivered through 639 loans, providing essential financial support to aspiring entrepreneurs across the Kingston upon Hull local authority.

Impact On Local Businesses

The Start Up Loans programme is designed to give budding business owners the financial means to launch and grow their ventures. Alongside the monetary support, the programme also offers valuable post-loan assistance, like mentoring, to help these businesses thrive. This dual approach not only provides funds but also equips entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Some key highlights from the programme's impact in Hull include:

  • 639 loans issued to local businesses.

  • 36% of loan recipients are female founders, showcasing the programme’s commitment to diversity.

  • Almost 43% of recipients aged 18–24 were classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) before receiving support.

These figures illustrate how the Start Up Loans programme is not only supporting new businesses but also addressing the challenges faced by specific groups, particularly young entrepreneurs and women.

Supporting Young Entrepreneurs

One of the standout features of the Start Up Loans programme is its focus on uplifting diversity and supporting traditionally underrepresented groups in accessing business finance. In Hull, 19% of the recipients are young adults aged 18-24, many of whom faced barriers to employment before starting their own businesses. This is particularly significant as the programme has helped over a quarter (28%) of loan recipients transition from unemployment to becoming business owners. The programme is proving to be a pathway for young people to secure their futures through entrepreneurship, helping them build skills and confidence along the way.

Success Stories

Among the many success stories emerging from the Start Up Loans programme is Synclair’s Florist, a business based in Hull. Owner Jayne Synclair received a £12,000 loan through the programme, which allowed her to secure her first premises and purchase initial stock. After years of working in floristry, Jayne was inspired to start her own shop due to the growing demand for floral arrangements and houseplants. Synclair’s Florist now offers a range of products, from bespoke flower arrangements to unique houseplants sourced from around the globe. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Jayne also provides advice on plant care to her customers. Jayne expressed her gratitude for the support she received:

“I’ve worked in floristry most of my life but opening my own shop still felt like a big leap. The Start Up Loan gave me the confidence to just go for it, and so we took on an old butcher’s unit and transformed it into a bright, colourful florist in just a few weeks. It feels great to be part of the flourishing small business ecosystem here in Hull and to see customers coming in who are just as passionate about plants as I am.”

Government Support

The Start Up Loans programme is funded by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and is operated by The Start-Up Loans Company, which is a subsidiary of the British Business Bank. The programme aims to ensure that viable start-ups and early-stage businesses have access to the finance and support they need to thrive.

Small Business Minister, Blair McDougall, highlighted the importance of this initiative:

“The government is determined to unlock the UK’s immense growth potential and that means ensuring entrepreneurs can access the finance they need, including through the Start Up Loans programme. This is an impressive milestone for the programme which has supported entrepreneurs and businesses in Hull, boosting the local economy and raising living standards.”

Louise McCoy, Managing Director of Start Up Loans Products at the British Business Bank, echoed these sentiments:

“The Start Up Loans programme is having a fantastic impact supporting new businesses across Hull, helping people into work and strengthening the city’s entrepreneurial community. I’m particularly proud of the number of young founders we’ve been able to support, especially those who were previously classed as NEET. It shows how the programme is opening doors for people who often face the toughest barriers to getting started, providing them with a new route into employment.”
