Stagecoach Yorkshire Bus Drivers Sleep Outdoors to Raise Funds for Homeless Youth

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 11th, 2026

Bus drivers from Stagecoach Yorkshire recently took part in a special challenge to raise awareness and funds for young people facing homelessness. On a chilly night, a group of brave drivers, along with some of their colleagues, decided to sleep outside under the stars to highlight the struggles of those who are forced to sleep rough.

Team of Drivers

The team included drivers from various depots, showing their commitment to the cause. Among them were Cheryl Green and Diane Lyons from Barnsley, Laurence Pickford from Chesterfield, Andrew Boulby from Rawmarsh, Anton Normal-Taylor from Ecclesfield, and Darryl Mycock, along with Ami Copp and Wes Harris from Holbrook. Together, they aimed to raise funds and awareness for Roundabout, a local charity dedicated to helping young people find safe housing.

The Experience

While the experience of sleeping outdoors was not the same as what homeless individuals endure, it was still a significant challenge for the team. Darryl Mycock shared his thoughts about the event:

“Nobody would say that the challenge exactly replicated the experience of sleeping rough, but it was still a challenge to do. I feel so strongly about the young people who are forced to live without a home to make them safe and warm. It is easy to become disillusioned and think that nothing can be done to help them, but we can all do our bit, so it is good to make a positive step to help out.”

Community Support and Donations

The event was more than just a night spent outside; it was also a call to action for the community. The team successfully raised over £1,000 for Roundabout, thanks to the generosity of colleagues, friends, and family members who supported the cause. Darryl expressed pride in the efforts of all involved:

“We are really proud of all our colleagues, who have either put themselves forward to participate in this event, or else donated to support us.”

He also acknowledged the hard work of Wes Harris, who organised the event, and Ami Copp, who encouraged sponsorships. The community spirit shown by all involved highlights how collective efforts can make a difference.

Roundabout's Mission

Roundabout works tirelessly to tackle youth homelessness in the region. The charity believes that every young person deserves a safe place to live and the support needed to build a brighter future. By providing a stable environment, they help young people develop the skills needed to become independent and break the cycle of homelessness.

Support from Stagecoach

Matt Kitchin, Managing Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, expressed his pride in the team’s efforts:

“As a local bus operator, we are an integral part of our local communities, so it is important to us to do something to support young people in need. I am very proud of everyone who took on this challenge and who donated to support them.”

His words reflect the commitment of Stagecoach to not only provide transportation services but also to engage meaningfully with the community.

Events like these not only raise funds but also spark conversations about important issues such as homelessness, especially among young people. The brave actions of the bus drivers serve as a reminder that everyone can play a part in making a positive impact, no matter how small. By working together, communities can help those in need find the support they deserve. The night spent under the stars by these drivers is a testament to the power of compassion and community spirit in Yorkshire.
