Welcome to Yorkshire

•Four dedicated engineers from Stagecoach Yorkshire are gearing up to tackle the National Three Peaks Challenge, a demanding feat that involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England, and Wales in just 24 hours. This courageous effort is not just about personal achievement; it aims to raise funds for a very special cause—supporting the daughter of one of the engineers, who is living with a rare medical condition known as Phelan McDermid Syndrome.
The Challenge Ahead
Jack Abbott, the Engineering Director, along with his colleagues Carl Rodgers (Engineering Manager), Eddie Brooks (Mechanic), and Chris Milton (Assistant Engineering Manager), will set out to conquer three formidable peaks: Ben Nevis at 1,344 metres, Scafell Pike at 978 metres, and Snowdon at 1,085 metres. The challenge includes:
23 miles of walking
3,064 metres of ascent
462 miles of driving between the mountains
This physically demanding journey is a true test of endurance, and it highlights the commitment of these engineers not only to their work but also to their community and colleagues.
Supporting a Special Cause
The funds raised from this challenge will go to the Phelan McDermid Syndrome Foundation (PMSF), a charity dedicated to supporting individuals with this rare genetic disorder. Phelan McDermid Syndrome affects approximately one in 10,000 people and is caused by a deletion of the SHANK3 gene, which plays a crucial role in brain development.
Eddie Brooks’ daughter, Amelia, is one of the many children affected by this syndrome. Amelia faces daily challenges that many people might not even think about. She experiences low muscle tone, severe developmental delay, and is non-verbal. Additionally, she is on the autism spectrum, making her journey even more complex. Eddie's determination to help his daughter drives this challenge, as he hopes the funds raised will provide essential support, therapies, and equipment to enhance Amelia's quality of life.
Community Spirit and Support
The team’s efforts have already garnered significant support from their colleagues within Stagecoach Yorkshire. Jack Abbott expressed his pride in their undertaking, stating, “We are proud to be tackling this challenge to support the wonderful work done by PMSF, and we have been pleased by the initial donations that have come in from colleagues across our region. This support can make a real difference to Amelia’s life.”
The engineers are not only pushing their physical limits but also rallying their community to come together for a cause that touches their lives personally. Donations raised will help provide necessary resources that can make a tangible difference in Amelia's daily life, improving her comfort and development.
How to Get Involved
Those wishing to support the engineers in their challenge can contribute through their fundraising campaign page. Every little bit helps, and the impact of each donation can be profound for families affected by Phelan McDermid Syndrome. Looking Ahead
The National Three Peaks Challenge is set to take place soon, and as the engineers prepare, they embody the spirit of camaraderie and resilience. Their determination reflects not only their professional commitment but also a deep sense of empathy and support for those in their community facing difficult challenges.
As they lace up their hiking boots and prepare to ascend some of the highest peaks in the UK, they carry with them the hopes and dreams of Amelia and countless others like her. This challenge is more than just a physical test; it is a testament to the power of community and the lengths people will go to support one another in times of need.
