Welcome to Yorkshire

•Residents at Meadowbeck Care Home in York recently joined in a global celebration by marking World Cocktail Day with a lively afternoon of fun and flavour. This special day, celebrated on May 13, commemorates the publication of the first recorded definition of a cocktail in 1806. It describes a cocktail as a “stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters.” This year, Meadowbeck's residents embraced the spirit of the occasion by sampling a variety of cocktails and mocktails, making it a delightful day for everyone involved.
Exciting Tasting Experience
World Cocktail Day offers something for everyone, whether one enjoys tequila, whisky, gin, or just experimenting with new flavours. At Meadowbeck, the staff and residents enjoyed a unique cocktails and jazz afternoon, where they could taste vibrant and fruity drinks. Some of the highlights included:
Sunset Surprise cocktails, bursting with tropical flavours
Refreshing mojitos made with lime and mint, perfect for a warm day
The atmosphere was made even more enjoyable by live music from Clare, who played jazz and swing tunes on her saxophone. Many residents couldn’t resist joining in with singing and dancing while sipping their drinks, creating a festive environment that brought smiles all around.
Joyful Reactions from Residents
Feedback from the residents highlighted just how much the event meant to them. Annaliza Kemp, the General Manager at Meadowbeck Care Home, shared her thoughts on the day: “We have all had so much fun today trying all sorts of different spirits and mixers from around the globe. Our residents really enjoyed their tasting session and had great fun sampling different cocktail recipes.”
One resident, Diana, expressed her excitement, stating, “I absolutely love a cocktail; it reminded me of being somewhere exotic. I very much enjoyed trying some different mixes, and I always like to try new things. I think I will sleep well tonight!” Her enthusiasm reflects the joy and nostalgia that such events can bring, allowing residents to relive fond memories and experience new flavours.

Significance of World Cocktail Day
World Cocktail Day is more than just a chance to enjoy tasty drinks; it encourages people to explore new tastes and celebrate the art of cocktail making. This day is recognised globally, inviting enthusiasts to try something unique or exotic. For many, it’s an opportunity to venture beyond their usual choices and discover new favourites. Events like those held at Meadowbeck not only provide entertainment but also foster social interaction and connection among residents, which is vital for their overall well-being.
