What Makes Spirit Of Yorkshire One Of The World's Top 50 Whisky Producers?

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on December 19th, 2025

The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) named Spirit of Yorkshire a top 50 global producer for its consistent quality. This award recognizes excellence across the distillery's entire portfolio, not just one product. The family-run, 'field to bottle' operation proved its world-class status by winning 14 IWSC awards for its Filey Bay range.

Imagine your local football team, full of homegrown talent, suddenly getting called up to play in the Champions League. That’s pretty much what’s happened in the world of whisky. A distillery from North Yorkshire, Spirit of Yorkshire, has just been named one of the top 50 spirits producers on the entire planet. This isn't just a lucky win; it’s a massive pat on the back, an accolade that puts them on the same stage as the biggest names in the business.

On 17th December, the news broke that this relatively young distillery has earned a spot on a seriously exclusive list, proving that great whisky isn't just made in Scotland.

What is this big award all about?

The award comes from the IWSC, which stands for the International Wine & Spirit Competition. Think of it as the BAFTAs or the Oscars for drinks. Getting a nod from them is a huge deal. They’ve been around since 1969, so they know a thing or two about what makes a good drink. The IWSC has just launched a new list: the ‘Top 50 Producers’. This isn’t about finding one amazing bottle of whisky or wine. It’s about celebrating the distilleries and producers who consistently make brilliant stuff across their entire range, year after year. It's an award for all-round excellence.

Christelle Guibert, the CEO of the company that runs the IWSC, explained why they created this new list. She said: “The IWSC Top 50 Producers celebrates the outstanding achievements of the most consistent and high-performing producers across wine and spirits. The initiative was inspired by a desire to spotlight those who demonstrate excellence across their portfolio, not just through one standout product.”

Basically, you can’t fluke your way onto this list. The judges look at results from competitions all over the world to find producers who are totally committed to quality, innovation, and authenticity. Guibert added:

“These producers distinguish themselves through their commitment to quality, innovation, and authenticity... Whether a boutique producer or an international name, each has impressed the IWSC’s expert judges with exceptional quality and a strong, unmistakable identity.”

This makes the achievement for the Yorkshire distillery even more special. It's recognition of their passion and outstanding craftsmanship. This competition is tough, and being named among the top producers is a real testament to their hard work.

A family-run distillery punching above its weight

What makes this story even better is that Spirit of Yorkshire isn’t some ancient, mega-corporation. It’s a family-run business based in Hunmanby, on the Yorkshire coast. They’ve only been making their single malt whisky for nine years. In the world of whisky, where some distilleries have been around for centuries, that makes them the new kid on the block. They are a true single estate distillery, which means they do everything themselves, right there on their farm. They grow their own barley, distil the spirits, and bottle the final product. It’s a proper 'field to bottle' operation, a concept that guarantees complete control over the quality.

Joe Clark, the whisky director at Spirit of Yorkshire, was clearly chuffed. He said:

“For our family-run, Single Estate distillery, farming our barley from field to bottle right here on the Yorkshire coast, this is a great achievement, especially given we’ve only been producing whisky for nine years and are competing with distilleries that have been producing whisky for centuries.”

He also pointed out that while they’ve won lots of medals before, this one feels different. “We’ve earned many significant medals and awards over the years, but the IWSC Top 50 award is different. It very clearly places Spirit Of Yorkshire among the world’s very best distilleries and distilling companies. The IWSC began in 1969 and carries immense prestige, and this is a monumental, team-wide achievement we will absolutely celebrate.” It’s a huge validation for this English distillery, proving that their approach to making single malt whisky is world-class. The distillery is also one of a tiny number worldwide that uses 100% homegrown barley from regenerative farming, which focuses on improving soil health. So, their whisky is not just good, it's made with care for the environment.

The award-winning whiskies that made it happen

So, how did they get here? Through sheer, consistent quality. The distillery’s Filey Bay range of single malt whiskies has been racking up awards for fun. Over the last three years alone, their whiskies have won an incredible 14 IWSC awards. That’s not a typo. Fourteen! And it's not just bronze and silver; they’ve bagged the top prize, a gold medal, for several of their expressions.

Here's a look at some of the stars of the show:

  • Filey Bay Flagship: Gold
  • Filey Bay STR Finish: Gold
  • Filey Bay Moscatel Finish: Gold
  • Filey Bay Sherry Cask Reserve: Silver
  • Filey Bay IPA Finish: Silver
  • Filey Bay Peated Finish: Silver
  • Filey Bay Yorkshire Day: Silver

This impressive haul of awards shows the depth of quality across their different styles of whisky. From their core Flagship bottle to more experimental finishes, the judges have loved them all. In fact, in 2024, Spirit of Yorkshire was the most awarded English distillery in the competition. This consistent success is exactly what the IWSC was looking for when creating its Top 50 Producers list. It’s a story of pure dedication to making exceptional spirits. The Filey Bay range is really putting Yorkshire on the global whisky map.

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with giants

To really get a sense of how big this is, just look at some of the other names on the Top 50 list. Spirit of Yorkshire is now rubbing shoulders with the titans of the industry. We're talking about legendary Scottish distilleries like Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie, and global drinks giants like Diageo (who own Johnnie Walker and Talisker) and Bacardi. These are household names, producers with massive budgets and centuries of history behind them.

For a small, family-run operation from Yorkshire to be ranked alongside these global producers is an incredible achievement. It shows that passion, innovation, and a focus on quality can allow smaller distilleries to compete with the very best. This accolade from the IWSC isn't just a win for Spirit of Yorkshire; it's a win for the entire English whisky scene. It proves that the craftsmanship and quality of spirits being produced in England are right up there with the best in the world. The next time someone reaches for a bottle of single malt, they might just be looking for one that comes from the beautiful Yorkshire coast. This recognition is a massive step forward for the distillery and for the reputation of English whisky worldwide.
