Welcome to Yorkshire
Published on December 5th, 2025
•Ever walked past that massive diamond-shaped building on Trinity Road in Halifax and wondered what’s going on inside? Well, something big has just happened. Lloyds Banking Group, the biggest private employer in Calderdale, has invested a huge £116 million refurbishing its iconic Halifax office.
On 1 December 2025, the doors reopened to thousands of colleagues. This isn’t just a modern makeover; it’s a long-term investment in Yorkshire, its people, and its economic future. The project has turned a local landmark into a sustainable, modern workplace while carefully preserving its history.

A massive makeover for a local landmark
So, what does £116 million actually pay for? In this case, a completely revitalised workspace designed for the future.
The Trinity Road refurbishment is one of the largest investments the area has seen. The aim was to create a modern, collaborative, wellbeing-focused workspace for the 3,500 colleagues who will use the site as their main base. Think of it less as an office and more as a workplace campus.
This investment also strengthens Lloyds’ position as the region’s largest private employer — providing stability and opportunity for families across Calderdale. The project was carried out alongside partners Wates and Calderdale Council, ensuring benefits flowed into the wider community.
It’s a clear sign of Lloyds Banking Group’s long-term commitment to Halifax.
Keeping the old while bringing in the new
One standout achievement of the refurbishment is how carefully it protects the building’s heritage.
The office first opened in 1973 and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974. It has been a major part of Halifax’s business identity for decades.
Instead of knocking it down, the project preserved:
- The iconic York Stone exterior
- Listed timber panelling inside
- The unique 5×5 grid lighting system
These preserved features sit alongside new industrial-style interiors, modern fixtures, and updated workspaces. It’s a perfect blend of old and new — a modern workplace that still feels connected to its history.
Going green in a big way
The sustainability upgrades are where this refurbishment really shines.
The Halifax office now operates using zero-carbon heating powered by an advanced geothermal heat pump. Engineers drilled boreholes as deep as the Shard is tall to tap into natural underground heat. This will reduce the building’s carbon emissions by over 1,000 tonnes every year.
The building also now features:
- 100% renewable electricity
- Recycling stations made from 70% recycled plastic and 30% coffee grounds
- Three “living roofs” covered in plants to help local biodiversity
- A full rainwater harvesting system
With these upgrades, the Halifax site now holds an EPC A rating, the highest possible. It’s a model of how major workplaces can slash emissions without compromising usability or comfort.
More than just a desk: a place for people
The new Trinity Road office puts people and wellbeing at the heart of the design.
Some of the key new features include:
- Fully accessible “changing places” toilet facilities
- Braille signage throughout the building
- Quiet contemplation rooms
- A free fitness space run by local instructors
The building also supports the next generation of Yorkshire talent. Nearly 100 apprentices and T-level students use the site as a training and work base, gaining skills in digital, tech, and business management. Students from Calderdale and Kirklees Colleges benefit from hands-on experience in a real corporate environment.
It’s not just a workplace, it’s a training centre and community asset.
What the experts are saying
Leaders from across the region have praised the investment.
Sharon Doherty, Chief People and Places Officer at Lloyds Banking Group, said:
“Halifax has always been at the centre of our story, and this investment in Trinity Road is a testament to our commitment to Yorkshire, our colleagues, and the future of the region. We are proud to create a sustainable, inclusive, and inspiring workplace that honours our local heritage while supporting the next generation of Yorkshire talent.”
Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said:
“This investment is a fantastic vote of confidence in Calderdale and the wider region. By creating a modern, sustainable workplace, Lloyds is investing in our regional talent pipeline as well as bricks and mortar, creating high-quality T-level and apprenticeship opportunities in our vital digital and business sectors. Lloyds is setting the bar high for how businesses can preserve heritage while embracing innovation.”
Scott Camp, Managing Director at Wates Smartspace, added:
“The Halifax Trinity Road refurbishment is a true example of what can be achieved through collaboration. Working with Lloyds Banking Group and our partners, we’ve delivered a transformation that respects heritage while creating a modern, sustainable workplace for thousands of colleagues. This reflects our shared vision to combine sustainability, innovation, and social impact for the benefit of local communities.”
