How Did A Yorkshire Whisky Distillery Make The World's Top 50 Producers List?

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on December 4th, 2025

Ever hear a story about a local team suddenly playing in the world championships? That's pretty much what just happened in the world of whisky. A distillery from North Yorkshire, right on the coast, has just been named one of the top 50 spirits producers on the entire planet. The team at Spirit of Yorkshire, a Hunmanby-based single estate distillery, is celebrating some massive news that came through on Wednesday, December 3rd. They’ve landed a spot on a super exclusive list from the IWSC, not just for one good bottle, but for being consistently amazing. This is a huge deal, showing that a small team from Yorkshire can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the biggest names in the business.

What's this IWSC list all about?

So, what exactly is this list? It's compiled by the IWSC (International Wine & Spirit Competition), which is basically the Oscars for drinks. Getting any of their awards is a big win, but making it onto their Top 50 Producers list is next level. It's not about a single product having a lucky year. Instead, the judges look at a producer's performance over the last three competitions. They are looking for consistent quality, excellence, and success across a whole range of products, including both spirits and wine. It’s a true test of skill and dedication. The organisation behind the awards is Fine Wine & Spirits. Its CEO, Christelle Guibert, explained why this list is so special.

“The IWSC Top 50 Producers celebrates the outstanding achievements of the most consistent and high-performing producers across wine and spirits. The initiative was inspired by a desire to spotlight those who demonstrate excellence across their portfolio — not just through one standout product. By analysing results across all categories and global competitions, the Top 50 recognises the people and passion behind the bottles.”

She went on to say that these producers really stand out because of their commitment to quality, innovation, and authenticity. It’s all about genuine craftsmanship and a clear identity. The IWSC, which has been running since 1969, carries a lot of weight in the industry, so this recognition is a massive honour for any whisky distillery.

A monumental achievement for a Yorkshire team

For Spirit of Yorkshire, this award is particularly sweet because, in the grand scheme of things, they’re a pretty young distillery. They've only been producing their single malt whisky for nine years. When you consider that they’re competing with distilleries that have been perfecting their craft for centuries, it really puts the achievement into perspective. This family-run business does things differently. They have a "field to bottle" philosophy, meaning they control the entire process. They even grow their own barley on the family farm, using regenerative methods that are good for the environment. This commitment to home-grown ingredients is what makes them a 'Single Estate' distillery, giving them complete control over the final single malt. The whisky director, Joe Clark, was buzzing about the news.

“For our family-run, Single Estate distillery, farming our barley from field to bottle right here on the Yorkshire coast, this is a great achievement, especially given we’ve only been producing whisky for nine years and are competing with distilleries that have been producing whisky for centuries.”

“We’ve earned many significant medals and awards over the years, but the IWSC Top 50 award is different. It very clearly places Spirit Of Yorkshire among the world's very best distilleries and distilling companies. The IWSC began in 1969 and carries immense prestige, and this is a monumental, team-wide achievement we will absolutely celebrate.”

So, what makes their whisky so good?

Okay, they're on the list, but what about the actual whisky? The distillery's main brand is called Filey Bay, a name inspired by the stunning coastline right on their doorstep. And it seems the judges can’t get enough of it. Over the past three years alone, Filey Bay whiskies have collected an incredible 14 IWSC awards. That’s some serious consistency and a testament to their quality. In 2024, Spirit of Yorkshire was actually the most awarded English distillery at the competition. Here’s just a snapshot of the awards their single malt whisky has picked up:

  • Gold for Flagship: Their signature single malt.
  • Gold for STR Finish: A whisky finished in special shaved, toasted, and re-charred red wine casks.
  • Gold for Moscatel Finish: A sweet and fruity expression from Moscatel wine barrels.
  • Silver for Sherry Cask Reserve, IPA Finish, Peated Finish, and Yorkshire Day.

This long list of awards shows their excellence isn’t just a fluke. The team’s commitment to their craft shines through in every bottle, from their classic single malt to their more experimental finishes. It’s this dedication to making brilliant whisky that has now put them among the world’s elite spirits producers.

Playing in the big leagues with Glenfiddich and Bacardi

To really understand how massive this news is, you need to see who else is on the Top 50 producers list. We're talking about the titans of the industry. The list includes legendary Scottish distilleries like Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie, names that are known all over the world. But it also features enormous global companies like Diageo, who own Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff, and Bacardi. For a small, independent Yorkshire whisky distillery to be mentioned in the same breath as these giants is truly remarkable. It’s proof that passion, craftsmanship, and a focus on quality can help smaller producers compete on a global stage. This is a huge moment not just for Spirit of Yorkshire, but for the entire English whisky scene, showing that the world is taking notice of the incredible spirits being made right here.
