•Drivers in York are being warned to be cautious after reports of a sneaky parking ticket scam surfaced recently. The City of York Council has alerted residents about fake texts claiming that they have received parking fines, urging them to click on a link that leads to a fraudulent government website.
What is the Scam?
The scam involves scammers sending out text messages that look very convincing. These messages claim that the recipient has been issued a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) for a parking violation. The text includes a link that promises to provide more information or allow payment of the fine. However, this link directs users to a fake website that imitates a government site, where they are asked to enter personal details and make a payment.
It’s important to note that genuine parking fines are never sent via text message. Instead, they are usually affixed to the vehicle, handed to the driver, or sent through the post. If a parking fine arrives in any other way, it should raise immediate suspicions.
How to Protect Yourself
To avoid falling victim to this scam, residents are advised to follow these simple steps:
- Do not click on any links in suspicious messages.
- Do not share personal or banking information with anyone who contacts you about a parking fine via text or email.
- If you receive a message claiming you have a parking fine, report it immediately.
Councillor Katie Lomas, Executive Member for Equality and Inclusion with a focus on fraud at City of York Council, emphasised the importance of vigilance. She stated, “If you receive a parking fine by text or email, please do not go to the link. Do not give any of your personal or banking details. Instead, please report this to Veritau.”
Reporting Suspected Fraud
If anyone suspects they have been targeted by this scam, they should report it to Veritau, the council’s fraud prevention team. Reports can be made via phone at 0800 9179 247 or by email at fraud@york.gov.uk.

Staying Informed
Scams like this can be particularly distressing, especially for those who may not be familiar with how parking fines are typically issued. It is crucial for everyone, especially those living in or visiting York, to stay informed about these kinds of scams.
As technology continues to evolve, so do the tactics used by scammers. Keeping an eye out for unusual messages and knowing how to respond can help prevent falling victim to fraud. The City of York Council is committed to keeping residents safe and informed, working hard to combat these deceitful practices.
By sharing information about this scam, the council hopes to protect the community and ensure that residents are not tricked into giving away their hard-earned money. Staying alert is the best defence against these types of scams, and the community is encouraged to look out for one another.
