Yorkshire Team

•Running a marathon is a massive deal. Honestly, just finishing one is an incredible achievement. But what if that wasn't enough? What if someone decided to run all 26.2 miles dressed as a cheerleader, or even wearing a pair of wellies? Well, that's exactly what a brilliant group of runners from Yorkshire are planning to do at this year's TCS London Marathon.
They are all attempting to break official Guinness World Records titles, and their reasons for doing it are just as amazing as the challenges themselves. These aren't just about speed; they're a mix of serious elite running, incredibly powerful personal stories, and some fantastically bonkers eye-catching costume attempts that will have the crowds cheering extra loud.
Wellies, cheerleaders and cameras, oh my!

Forget standard running gear. Some of the attempts from the Yorkshire crew are proper head-turners. Think about the last time you wore wellies. Probably squelching through mud at a festival or on a farm. Now, picture running a whole marathon in them. That's the challenge Laura Jayne Stenton-Slater from Sheffield has set for herself. She's aiming for the record of Fastest marathon wearing Wellington boots (female). It sounds mad, doesn't it? The sheer grit needed to run that distance in heavy, clunky boots is mind-boggling. But her motivation is incredibly powerful. Laura is raising money for the charity Unique, who provided amazing support for her family after her eldest child received a diagnosis. Every painful step in those wellies is for a cause very close to her heart.

Then there's George Carley from Doncaster. He’s swapping his running vest for something with a bit more sparkle, as he attempts the Fastest Marathon dressed as a cheerleader record. George isn’t just doing it for a laugh; he's raising money for YMCA Doncaster, an organisation that played a big part in his life when he was growing up. It's a fantastic way of giving back, combining a tough physical challenge with a lot of fun.

And let's not forget Reef Rounding from Leeds, who is combining his profession with his passion. As a photographer, he’s attempting the Fastest marathon dressed as a camera. This is another one of the brilliant eye-catching costume attempts that make the TCS London Marathon so special. Reef hopes his unique challenge will inspire other people to get out there and do something amazing, seeing the world from a new perspective – or through a new lens, you might say.
Teamwork and elite running prowess

Not all the record attempts are solo efforts. Sarah Holmes, also from Leeds, is part of a team aiming for a record that requires an unbelievable amount of coordination. She, along with Helen Caldwell and Sam Cheverton, will be attempting the Fastest four-legged marathon (female team). What does that even mean? It means they will be tied together for the entire race. Think about that for a second. Every stride, every turn, every water stop has to be done in perfect sync. It's a true test of teamwork and communication, all while fundraising for the fantastic cause of Marie Curie.

Amongst the fantastic costumes and team efforts, there's also a display of pure athletic skill from one of Yorkshire's experienced runners. Matthew Itoro Akpan from Leeds is a seasoned marathon runner and already holds multiple Guinness World Records titles. He represents the elite running side of these record attempts, aiming to break the record for the Fastest marathon (male) – LL1 category. This category is for athletes with a specific lower limb impairment, making his achievements even more impressive. He is a true inspiration, showing what can be achieved with dedication and talent. Matthew will be running in memory of his late father, raising money for the National Autistic Society, adding a deeply personal and poignant layer to his incredible athletic pursuit.
Yorkshire's record-breakers
So, when the starting gun fires at the TCS London Marathon, there will be a special group of runners flying the flag for Yorkshire. Each one has a unique story and a massive challenge ahead of them. This is more than just a race; it's a collection of dreams, tributes, and brilliantly quirky goals. Here’s a quick look at the local heroes:
Laura Jayne Stenton-Slater (Sheffield): Going for the fastest marathon in wellies. A true test of endurance for the charity Unique.
Matthew Itoro Akpan (Leeds): An elite running champion aiming for another Guinness World Records title in the LL1 category, supporting the National Autistic Society.
George Carley (Doncaster): Bringing cheer to the course while dressed as a cheerleader, running for YMCA Doncaster.
Sarah Holmes (Leeds): Part of a three-person team attempting the fastest four-legged marathon for Marie Curie. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Reef Rounding (Leeds): A photographer running as a camera, hoping to inspire others with one of the most memorable eye-catching costume attempts.
Their journeys to the start line have been filled with hard work, and the race itself will be the final, massive push. They are all hoping to get their names into the famous book of Guinness World Records, creating some fantastic memories along the way. Good luck to every single one of them!
