🚆 National Railway Museum – York I visited the National Railway Museum in York, which actually consists of two main locations: the main museum with its vast collection of historic trains and royal carriages, and a secondary hall for special exhibitions and interactive displays. Both locations are very spacious and educational, showcasing steam locomotives, carriages, and railway history from the UK. One highlight is being able to see famous trains up close. There is also a café inside the main museum, perfect for resting and enjoying food or drinks. Entry is free, making it accessible for everyone. From an accessibility perspective, both museum areas are wheelchair friendly. Entrances are step-free, floors are flat, and aisles are wide for easy maneuvering. Lifts are available where needed, and accessible toilets with wheelchair logos are clearly marked. Staff are present and ready to assist when required. ♿ Accessibility Checklist ✅ Step-free entrance ✅ Wide aisles and spacious layout 🛗 Lifts available 🚻 Accessible toilets available (wheelchair logo) ♿ Flat and smooth flooring 🤝 Staff assistance available 📝 Note The museum is large and comfortable for wheelchair users. Even during busy hours, the wide aisles make it easy to move around. The café provides a nice break spot during a long visit. Both locations are worth exploring for a full experience. #GoogleLocalGuide #WalkAndSee #WheelchairAccessible #AccessibleTravel #York #MuseumVisit

This is an easy to miss attraction in York but with a town so steeped in history it’s appropriate to find a gem like the National Railway museum right here. The museum is a bit of a walk from the train station due to rerouting of construction (2025). The facility is tucked behind the main road and off the beaten track. They do offer a trolley to get you back into the city center if needed. As a national museum entry is free, but donations are welcome. Wander around at an easy pace with only a few stairs, this is a great place to explore on a quiet day. The sheer size of the engines on display are astounding and although you can’t get on any, there’s easy access to examine each and every one up close. Signage is excellent and if you’re into Trainspotting, they have some of the best! Don’t miss the “vault” of extras that’s also inside. Antiques from some of the country’s oldest trains are on display and it’s astounding to see the magnitude of this collection. Chairs, tea service, signage, books, and so much more! There’s a small gift center where you can pick up a book or two along with general merchandise such as mugs, t-shirts and other collectibles. Finally, if you’re feeling peckish there’s a handy place to grab a coffee or a snack. All in all a perfect place to spend an afternoon!

This is my happy place, I booked a trip a while ago and learned the other day that the flying Scotsman would be there, When I seen it with my own eyes I was in shock it was Huge, I always thought it'd be smaller than it is because pictures and games make them smaller, It's such a Masterpiece and it's so glorious to look at, but once I saw Mallard I was So excited I could've blew up, She's Such a work of art and is my favorite train, I would die to be allowed to hop in the cab and even blow the whistle, I think The National railway museum should bring her back to operation I know it's expensive and they will have to replace a bunch of parts but just the wonders of having her moving again, pulling special tours and going high speeds would bring joy to so many people and attract so many visitors it be amazing, I was so excited today running around taking pictures of the trains I forgot about the station hall and missed out on a bunch of great stuff, I can't believe I did that, my dream of going to York National Railway Museum finally happens and I forget to explore the station hall, overall it's a wonderful museum full of history and power, the staff were so kind, there was no Mallard caps left and before I could even ask they went out back and got more, I wish I could buy one of everything there but sadly I'm only doing a day trip, I could write so much more but I shouldn't, I dream of coming back again and hopefully there will be a train service from leeds to York and not a replacement bus service. Friendly Staff, Breath Taking Trains 5 Stars.

Excellent museum & rich in history. We booked tickets in advance via the website. It is free entry, easily accessible for wheelchairs etc. It does get busy so I would suggest booking tickets & it saves queuing. Within the ground there is plenty to see & I was pleasantly surprised how vast it is. Cafe's are set within the grounds (we had 2 large lattes at £8.10) plenty of seating if you wanted to bring your own pack lunches as many families did or you can order a family pack-lunch on site). Toilets are accessible & clean. There is a museum amongst all the history & this is payable to enter. There is another building across from the main one where you can continue the walkabout & continue viewing the fascinating history also a cafe in here too. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing Queen Victoria history. But there is something for everyone. A delightful way to spend a Sunday afternoon & the staff were very welcoming & polite which was a nice way to start the viewing. You can make a donation to the museum of your choosing & make it via cash or card if you so wish. I highly recommend going & making a day of it, you won't be disappointed. It is a gem of a place. Parking is permit only around the area or you can park on the car-park at a cost of £10 for the day (a very good offer considering entrance to the museum is free). 😊
