Welcome to Yorkshire

|From 5th to 8th June, The Deep in Hull will be hosting a unique event called ‘Deaf Marine Weekend’ in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh. This exciting initiative is set to coincide with World Ocean Day, a global celebration dedicated to the ocean and its importance to our planet. The event aims to create an inclusive environment specifically for the Deaf community, providing them with the opportunity to engage with marine science in a fun and accessible way.
New Signs for Marine Life

The highlight of the event is the introduction of 87 new signs for various marine species, developed by the Scottish Sensory Centre at the University of Edinburgh. This means that for the first time, Deaf visitors will have specific signs to refer to different sea creatures, making conversations about marine life easier and more engaging. Typically, Deaf individuals may need to spell out names of species letter by letter, which can be challenging and time-consuming. With these new signs, discussions can flow more naturally. The Deep is proud to serve as a venue for this educational initiative, which not only facilitates learning but also encourages conversations about marine species within the Deaf community. The aim is to foster a deeper connection between Deaf individuals and the ocean, promoting awareness about marine conservation.
Interactive Learning and Activities
Throughout the four-day event, attendees can look forward to a range of activities. From 11am to 2pm each day, BSL-interpreted ocean talks will take place, allowing participants to learn more about marine life in a way that is accessible to them. Additionally, there will be hands-on sensory activities designed to engage the senses and enhance understanding of marine environments. On the Friday, a special science workshop will be conducted for Deaf learners from a local school, offering them a focused opportunity to explore marine science topics in an educational setting. This dedication to inclusivity highlights the importance of engaging young people in environmental discussions and encouraging them to take an interest in marine conservation.
Supporting Marine Conservation
The Deaf Marine Weekend is part of a broader initiative known as the MUFFIN project (Marine Underwater Fish For INclusion), which is funded by the European Erasmus+ programme. This project aims to promote inclusion and accessibility within marine centres across Europe, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their hearing ability, can participate in marine conservation efforts.
Katy Duke, Chief Executive Officer at The Deep, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating:
“As a charity, we take pride in providing an accessible day out for everyone to connect with and celebrate the ocean. Through hosting Deaf Marine Weekend in partnership with the University of Edinburgh, we’re collectively helping to ensure that more visitors can experience the wonder of marine life, learn about the challenges facing our oceans, and feel empowered to play a role in protecting them.”
Community Engagement
The event not only serves as a learning experience but also as a reminder of the importance of community engagement in scientific discussions. Dr Audrey Cameron, Chancellor’s Fellow (Science Education and Sign Language) at the University of Edinburgh, shared her excitement about the event, saying:
“It's incredibly exciting to see The Deep open its doors to the Deaf community in this way. Events like this remind us that science belongs to everyone, and that with the right resources, there are no barriers to exploring the natural world.”
This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring that all members of the community can access and enjoy educational resources about marine life and conservation. By breaking down barriers and providing the necessary tools for communication, The Deep and the University of Edinburgh are paving the way for a more inclusive approach to science and environmental education.
Why It Matters
The Deaf Marine Weekend is more than just an event; it is a celebration of inclusivity and education in the context of marine conservation. It demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their hearing ability, can learn about and engage with the vital issues surrounding our oceans. This is particularly important in today’s world, where marine environments are facing numerous challenges due to climate change, pollution, and overfishing. By empowering the Deaf community with knowledge and facilitating discussions about marine conservation, the event aims to inspire a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the ocean. Visitors will leave not only with new knowledge but also with the understanding that they can play an active role in protecting marine ecosystems. The Deaf Marine Weekend at The Deep promises to be an inspiring and educational experience, setting a precedent for future events that aim to include diverse communities in conversations about our planet's health. With its focus on accessibility and engagement, it stands as a model for how educational institutions can work towards inclusivity in science and conservation efforts.
