That feeling when the alarm goes off on a Monday morning is a universal pain. But what if that groggy, not-quite-ready-for-the-world feeling is actually the new normal? It turns out that as a nation, Brits are getting a lot less sleep than they need. And with the annual chaos of the clocks springing forward, that precious hour of rest becomes even more vital. New research from Premier Inn has uncovered some fascinating truths about the UK's sleep habits, and there’s some brilliant news for Yorkshire, as it seems people in Leeds have got the right idea when it comes to getting a bit of extra shut-eye.

The great British sleep deficit

Let's talk numbers for a second. On average, people in the UK are getting just six hours and 27 minutes of sleep a night. That might not sound too bad until it’s compared to the seven hours and 44 minutes that adults say they actually need to feel properly human. This creates a nightly sleep deficit of 77 minutes. Over a whole year, that adds up to a massive 468 hours of lost sleep, which is the same as 20 full days. Imagine what could be done with an extra 20 days of rest! It’s no wonder so many people feel like they’re running on empty. The impact of this lack of rest is huge, with almost half of people (49%) saying their mood is noticeably better after getting some extra sleep. A good lie-in isn’t just a lazy treat; it’s a powerful mood booster. Yet for many, it’s a rare luxury. The data shows one in eight people haven’t had a proper lie-in for over a year, which is a truly shocking statistic. It highlights a real need for better bedtime routines and more opportunities for proper rest.

Leeds: a city that loves a lie-in

Here’s where the good news comes in for our corner of the world. The study by Premier Inn found that Leeds is officially one of the best cities in the country for a lie-in. A whopping 31% of adults in Leeds manage to get a weekly lie-in, putting the city in joint second place nationally. It seems the people of Leeds understand the importance of catching up on their sleep and taking a moment for themselves. This commitment to rest is something to be proud of. The only city that beats Leeds is Liverpool, where a third of adults (33%) enjoy a weekly lie-in. Leeds shares its silver medal position with Cardiff, another city that clearly values its weekend rest. It’s a completely different story in other parts of the country, though. Down in Brighton and Hove, it seems the population is the most sleep-starved, with a quarter of adults admitting they haven’t had a decent lie-in for over a year. Even the time people get up varies wildly. The dedicated sleepers in Liverpool stay in bed until 9:22 am on average, while folks in Cambridge are up and at it by around 8:43 am.

  • Liverpool – 33%

  • Leeds – 31%

  • Cardiff – 31%

  • Bristol – 30%

When the clocks change everything

Every year, there’s one particular day that causes a bit of chaos for everyone’s internal body clock: the day the clocks ‘spring forward’. On Sunday, 29th March, the nation will lose an hour of sleep, and while it’s a yearly event, the disruption it causes is very real. That single hour might not seem like much, but when Brits are already dealing with a sleep deficit, it’s an hour they really can’t afford to lose. This seasonal adjustment can throw bedtime routines completely out of whack. For 25-34-year-olds, the disruption is felt even more sharply, with nearly half admitting the shift messes with their entire schedule. It’s more than just a minor inconvenience; it's a genuine challenge to the consistency of our sleep patterns, which are so important for overall well-being. This lost hour can leave people feeling groggy and out of sorts for days afterwards.

Premier Inn to the rescue with an extra hour of comfort

This is where Premier Inn has stepped in with a brilliantly simple idea. To fight back against the tyranny of the clock change, the hotel chain is giving that stolen hour back to its guests. On Sunday, 29th March, all 800+ of its UK hotels, including those in Leeds, will extend their checkout times by a full hour, moving from 12 pm to 1 pm. They’re calling it the nation’s first ‘Premier Lie-Inn’, a clever way to ensure guests can enjoy some extra rest and comfort. It's a fantastic gesture that shows an understanding of how much that extra sleep matters. It means guests don’t have to rush their morning and can properly enjoy that Sunday feeling without worrying about the time. This move reinforces the brand’s focus on providing a great night's sleep and ensuring guests wake up rested and refreshed. People who want to experience this should book a stay for that weekend.

A spokesperson at Premier Inn said:

“When it comes to sleep, consistency is king and so we’re delighted to give back the extra hour lost from the clock’s going forward and invite the UK to have a well-deserved lie in. The lie in is an often-over-looked national treasure, and we think it's high time it was treated like one. Our research shows Brits love nothing more than a slow, unhurried morning - and yet so rarely get one. The clocks will take an hour from us this spring, but this year we’re giving it back. It’s a simple gesture, but a joyful one. If an extra hour helps people start the day feeling calmer, brighter and a little more themselves, then we’ll be very happy to have played a part in it.”
