If you live in West Hull, you might have noticed some footpaths looking a little worse for wear. The good news? Hull City Council is rolling out the next phase of footpath improvements under the Love Your Neighbourhood scheme, bringing smoother, safer walkways to Boothferry and Derringham.

Which Streets Are Getting Resurfaced?

Starting Thursday, 13 March 2025, resurfacing and reconstruction work will take place on the following streets:

  • Ampleforth Grove
  • Helmsley Grove
  • Helmsley Avenue
  • Ainthorpe Grove

These areas were flagged during a Love Your Neighbourhood ‘patch walk’, where council teams identified paths in urgent need of repair. Some have become uneven and difficult to navigate—especially for people with mobility issues, prams, or wheelchairs. Once the work is done, residents will have safer, smoother, and more accessible footpaths.

When Will the Work Happen?

To reduce disruption, the work will happen in phases:

LocationDates
Ampleforth Grove (North side: Speeton Grove to No. 62 & South side: No. 35 to No. 4)13 March – 4 April
Helmsley Grove (North side: No. 62 to Woodlands Road & South side: Garton Grove to Woodlands Road)7 April – 25 April
Ainthorpe Grove (West side: Helmsley Grove to Willerby Road & East side: Helmsley Grove to Ampleforth Grove)28 April – 16 May
Ampleforth Grove (South side: Helmsley Grove to Spring Bank West)19 May – 7 June

Note: These dates are provisional and may change depending on weather and other factors.

What Should Residents Expect?

  • Footpath closures will be in place while work is carried out.
  • Access for residents and emergency services will be maintained.
  • Letters have already been sent to affected households so residents know what to expect.

Why Is This Work Important?

Councillor Charles Quinn, who oversees environmental projects, explained:

“Love Your Neighbourhood isn’t just about keeping areas clean—it’s also about making our communities safer and more welcoming places to live.”

Meanwhile, Councillor Mark Ieronimo, responsible for roads and highways, added:

“We know these improvements will make a real difference to people’s daily lives. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we carry out this essential work.”

Who’s Paying for the Work?

The project is being funded by Hull City Council as part of the Love Your Neighbourhood initiative and will be carried out by Atkin Surfacing Limited.

This latest round of improvements follows work already underway in Holderness, showing the council’s commitment to improving footpaths across the city.

So, if you live in Boothferry or Derringham, expect some short-term inconvenience—but a big improvement in the long run!
