•The Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival is set to bring a diverse array of high-profile guests, including leading figures from literature, politics, sports, and entertainment. Running from October 10-20, 2024, in the charming town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, this year’s festival promises to inspire, educate, and entertain a broad audience with its captivating lineup of speakers and events.

A diverse roster of notable guests
Among this year’s top attractions is Theresa May, the former UK Prime Minister, who will delve into her latest work, The Abuse of Power. Her talk is expected to offer insights into her political journey and the systemic issues within British public institutions.
Also headlining is the legendary broadcaster Dame Joan Bakewell, known for her sharp intellect and reflective commentary. Bakewell will share thoughts from her memoir, The Tick of Two Clocks, focusing on the importance of living a fulfilling life in old age and her illustrious career.
Sports enthusiasts have much to look forward to with appearances by Julian Norton, the beloved star of The Yorkshire Vet, and Peter Reid, the former Leeds United manager and England midfielder. Norton will share anecdotes from his veterinary practice, while Reid will discuss the highs and lows of his football career. Fans of cricket won’t want to miss Monty Panesar, the celebrated former England cricketer, who will reflect on his pioneering role as the first Sikh to represent England in the sport.
A spotlight on literature and history
Famed author Victoria Hislop will bring her storytelling prowess to the festival with her new novel, The Figurine, a tale steeped in history and art. Meanwhile, historian and biographer Alison Weir is set to transport audiences to the turbulent Tudor period with her book Mary I: Queen of Sorrows, which examines the personal challenges and historical impact of Mary I of England.
This year's festival also boasts an appearance from Adam Kay, former doctor turned comedian, who will discuss his experiences in the NHS and his latest work Undoctored. Additionally, Doon Mackichan, known for her roles in The Day Today and Smack the Pony, will reflect on her career and feminist journey in her memoir My Lady Parts.
Cultural and lifestyle perspectives
For those seeking lighter fare, etiquette coach William Hanson will discuss his book Just Good Manners, offering a humorous take on British traditions and etiquette. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate Tom Surgey, TV presenter and wine expert, who is set to guide audiences through an approachable and enjoyable exploration of wine.
BBC journalist Ros Atkins will also grace the stage, sharing insights into his book The Art of Explanation, which unpacks his journey in journalism and the art of effective communication.

Organised by Harrogate International Festivals, the event has garnered praise from Harper’s Bazaar as "one of the UK’s best literary festivals" and was highlighted by The Guardian as one of the top three literary events in the country. The Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival has become a premier gathering for authors, thinkers, and readers alike, offering an intimate and engaging setting for the exchange of ideas.
