Yorkshire Team

•Imagine getting to drive a brand-new, top-of-the-range Land Rover through muddy tracks and over tricky obstacles. Sounds like a brilliant day out, right? Now, what if doing that also helped raise a huge amount of money for children who really need a break? That’s exactly what happened when The Principle Trust Children’s Charity teamed up with Land Rover Experience North Yorkshire for a special fundraising event. They managed to raise over £5,000, all to help families facing tough times. It just goes to show that having fun and doing good can absolutely go hand-in-hand.

A different kind of team day out
On Thursday 19th March, a group of teams gathered at the beautiful Broughton Hall Estate near Skipton, but not for a normal day at the office. This was something much more exciting. They were there for an action-packed day of challenges, all organised by the Land Rover Experience North Yorkshire team. The day was hosted by the Directors of Land Rover Experience, Nick and Jonathan Rumboll, along with their expert instructors, who know a thing or two about handling a 4x4. The whole point was to get people working together, testing their skills, and having a laugh, all while raising money for a fantastic local charity.
The day wasn't just about driving, either. It was a proper adventure. Teams took part in Geocaching, which is basically a high-tech treasure hunt using GPS. It got everyone exploring the estate and working together to solve clues. And, of course, there were the exhilarating off-road competitions. It was a chance for people to put their driving skills to the test in a friendly but competitive way. Forget trust falls; this was team building with a bit more horsepower and a lot more mud. The day was a massive success, proving that a unique fundraising event can make a real difference.
Getting behind the wheel for a cause
The main event was a high-adrenaline challenge called a 'vehicle gymkhana'. If that sounds complicated, think of it as a super-tricky obstacle course for cars. Drivers had to be incredibly precise, navigating tight courses filled with obstacles that would test their nerve and control. It wasn't just about speed; it was about strategy and careful driving. The challenge really tested everyone's driving skills.
And the cars they got to drive were incredible. Participants could get behind the wheel of a shiny new Land Rover Defender, a luxurious Range Rover, or a versatile Discovery. These weren't just any cars; they were packed with the latest technology designed to handle the toughest terrain. So, whether someone was a total novice or a seasoned driver, the Land Rover Experience instructors were on hand to make sure everyone could have a go and feel confident. Every single penny from the entry fees went directly to The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, so every tight turn and carefully navigated obstacle was helping to support vulnerable children and their families.
More than just driving
A day of adventure needs some good fuel, and the organisers made sure everyone was well looked after. The day kicked off with a hearty breakfast at The Bull at Broughton, getting everyone ready for the morning's challenges. After a few hours of navigating tricky terrain and hunting for geocaches, it was time for lunch. And what a lunch it was! Palomino Pizza Co. hosted a pizza lunch at the Land Rover Experience centre, which definitely hit the spot.
After the afternoon's driving sessions were complete and the winners of the off-road competitions were decided, everyone regrouped at The Bull at Broughton again. This time, it was for a traditional pie and pea supper – a proper Yorkshire treat. This was followed by the prize-giving ceremony, where the day's champions were celebrated. It was the perfect way to end a fantastic day, with good food, good company, and the brilliant feeling of having supported an amazing charity. The entire day, from breakfast to the pie and pea supper, was designed to make the fundraising event as enjoyable as possible.
The people making it happen
The whole event was a huge success, and it wouldn't have been possible without the amazing people behind it. Mike Davies MBE, the founder of The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, was thrilled with how the day went. He said,
“This event was a hugely proud moment for the charity. Bringing teams together for a day packed with activities that encouraged teamwork was fantastic. A special thank you to the Directors of Land Rover Experience who kindly supported the charity with the experience day - Nick and Jonathan Rumboll. It was made even more special thanks to Land Rover Experience North Yorkshire and its instructors, who made sure everyone got involved, all with the same goal of raising vital funds for families across Yorkshire.”
His words show just how much this collaboration meant. It’s a perfect example of a local business and a charity working together to create something special. The Land Rover Experience North Yorkshire team didn't just provide the cars and the location; they brought the expertise and enthusiasm that made the day unforgettable for everyone involved. It’s this kind of community spirit that helps a charity like The Principle Trust Children's Charity continue its vital work.
Why this matters so much
So, where does all that money go? It goes towards something incredibly important. The Principle Trust Children’s Charity was started in 2011 by Mike Davies MBE to provide respite breaks for children who are facing really difficult situations. Since it began, the charity has helped almost 6,000 children get a much-needed holiday. A respite break is a short holiday away from home, giving families a chance to relax, have fun, and make happy memories, away from their daily struggles.
The charity owns eight respite homes in popular holiday spots like Blackpool, Filey, and the Lake District. These homes provide a safe and happy place for around 308 families each year. The children who benefit from these breaks are dealing with some of the toughest childhood experiences imaginable. This can include things like:
Severe mental health challenges
Trauma and abuse
Living in poverty
Serious illness and disabilities
For a child dealing with any of these issues, a short break can be life-changing. It's a chance to just be a kid, to build a sandcastle in Blackpool, to explore the countryside in the Lake District, or to enjoy the seaside at Filey. The money raised from this fantastic Land Rover Experience will help fund more of these respite breaks, providing a little bit of sunshine for families who need it most. The work of this charity is a lifeline for so many.
