|The Central Tramway Company has proudly announced that its recent summer fundraising efforts have successfully raised £925.24 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). This impressive achievement is a reflection of the generous support provided by visitors to the historic tramway during the summer months. The funds will directly benefit the Scarborough Lifeboat Station, a key part of the town’s rich maritime history.

A longstanding relationship with Scarborough’s RNLI
The Scarborough Lifeboat Station is one of the oldest in the UK, with its roots dating back to 1801, when public donations allowed for the purchase of the first lifeboat for £147. Later, in 1824, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was officially established, and Scarborough became part of the institution in 1861. Much like the Central Tramway Company, which is a familiar fixture of Scarborough’s seafront, the lifeboat station boasts a long and proud history of serving the community.
The earliest lifeboats were large rowing vessels, crewed by 10 oarsmen. Over the centuries, the RNLI's technology has evolved significantly. Today, the Scarborough Lifeboat Station operates a state-of-the-art Shannon Class lifeboat, worth £2.5 million. This water-jet-driven lifeboat carries a crew of six and features advanced navigational systems to ensure swift responses to emergencies at sea.
Fundraising efforts led by Central Tramway
The Central Tramway Company has a long-standing tradition of supporting local causes, with the RNLI being one of their key partners. This summer’s fundraising efforts included various activities, such as a 200km cycling challenge undertaken by Colin Powell, the company’s General Manager. His dedication to the cause helped engage visitors and locals alike in supporting the fundraising initiative.
Photos from the event show Powell cycling at the lower station of the Central Tramway to raise awareness and donations. His commitment extended through the season, and by the end of summer, he was seen handing over the collection buckets to the RNLI, symbolising the community’s collective support for the lifesaving institution.
Continued support for RNLI
The Central Tramway Company remains committed to supporting the RNLI in the future. As a vital part of Scarborough’s historic landscape, the tramway and its visitors play a key role in raising awareness and funds for essential local services such as the lifeboat station. Through continued partnerships like this, the RNLI is better equipped to maintain its crucial role in saving lives at sea.
The Central Tramway Company’s contribution is just one example of how local businesses and individuals can make a tangible difference to their communities. Visitors to Scarborough can feel proud knowing that their use of the tramway this summer has directly helped fund the lifeboat station’s ongoing operations.
For those interested in supporting the RNLI further, donations can be made directly to the institution, helping ensure the Shannon Class lifeboat remains well-maintained and ready to respond to the needs of Scarborough’s coastal community.
