Looking for a place to eat before doing the train journey to Carlisle, I decided to try this historic pub in the market square. It turned out to be an excellent choice! Spacious and wood panelled inside, it's a bit dated but full of character and charm. There's a variety of seating, and a pool table in one of the rooms. Clean, spacious downstairs toilets. I had my lunch in a comfortable lounge with some nice pictures on the walls. Both the girl behind the bar and the chef were welcoming and friendly. There were local ales and cider, and a selection of hot drinks too, but I opted for a medium glass of Zinfandel Rose wine, and it was really good. The menu offered a choice of traditional British pub food, steaks and burgers, and also some Greek and Mediterranean dishes, as well as a few lighter options with smaller portions. Some good old-fashioned desserts too! I decided to try one of the Greek dishes: grilled vegetable souvlaki, a skewer of delicious mushrooms, onions, aubergine and courgettes in olive oil, seasoned with salt, pepper and pesto, and served with green salad, rice and a small pot of tomato and basil sauce. Well cooked and presented, with ample portions and wonderful flavours, and the dressed salad was both fresh and tasty. Both the meal and the wine were reasonably priced. This pub seemed popular with locals as well as tourists, and it was not hard to see why! Would definitely recommend!
The Royal Oak has been taken over by lovely people it’s warm and the food is lovely it’s reasonably priced and it’s clean so thank you for making it a lovely pub again. Only one thing have you thought about moving the wood burner to the main big room the fire does draw people in the red lion and the listers in malham always have their fire lit and they are always busy.
We visited about six months ago and were disappointed with the food, but decided to give it another try—and we’re so glad we did! The food was fantastic, and the staff were excellent. It’s clearly under new management now, and the difference really shows.
booked for dinner, fantastic service from Poppy and brilliant food from chef Amir. Read earlier reviews and worried it wasn't great there, but following more recent reviews since being run by new people, thought we would give it a go and so glad we did! ignore early reviews, this place is brilliant!
Absolutely fantastic Sunday lunch, very good selection, very friendly staff. Well recommend to all, pet friendly as well.
