|Ever thought about what your ‘Plan B’ is? You know, for when life doesn’t quite stick to the script. Most of us have a Plan A sorted: work hard, pay the mortgage, save a bit, and hope for the best. But life can be a bit unpredictable. What if you get ill and can’t work? Or something unexpected happens? It’s not fun to think about, but having a solid safety net can make all the difference. That’s where ‘protection’ comes in, and it's something the team at PenLife Associates, a well-known firm of Chartered Financial Planners in Yorkshire, takes very seriously. This week, they announced a big step in boosting their financial planning process by appointing Niall McSharry as their new Protection and Insurance Specialist, a move designed to strengthen their advice proposition as part of their continued strategic growth.
So, who is the new expert on the block?
The new appointment is Niall McSharry, and he brings a really interesting background to his role as a Protection and Insurance Specialist. His journey into financial services wasn't exactly typical, and that’s what makes his perspective so valuable. His career kicked off back in 2016 at NFU Mutual, but not in a sales role. He was a Claims Handler, specifically for the equine and pet claims team. Think about that for a second. He was on the phone every day with people whose animals were sick or injured. He saw first-hand what happens when it’s time to actually use an insurance policy. This gave him a proper look at how the claims process works, why having the right policy is so important, and the reality of managing expectations when people are going through a stressful time. It’s one thing to sell a policy; it’s another to see what happens at the finish line.
After the world turned upside down with the Covid19 pandemic, Niall made a move into the property world with Bridgfords Estate Agents. It was here that he got a taste for the advisory side of things. After all, what’s the biggest financial commitment most people make? A mortgage. And what do you need when you have a massive loan? A plan to protect it. This led him to complete his Certificate in Mortgage Advice (Cert CII) and transition into a full-blown Mortgage and Protection Adviser role. This wasn’t just about mortgages; it was about broader client risk profiling and putting together holistic financial advice. He then moved to Fenton Simpson Financial Services, where he really honed his skills in specialist protection planning. He started dealing with more complex client scenarios, including personal and business protection for higher-risk cases, and worked closely with insurers on the nitty-gritty of underwriting.
But what does a ‘protection specialist’ actually do?
It’s a fair question. The term sounds a bit corporate, doesn't it? In simple terms, a Protection and Insurance Specialist helps people build a financial shield. This shield could be made up of different things, like life insurance, critical illness cover, or income protection. It’s all about making sure that if you or your family hits a major bump in the road—like a serious illness, an accident, or worse—there’s money available to keep things afloat. It could mean the mortgage still gets paid, the bills are covered, and your family doesn't have to face a financial crisis on top of an emotional one. Niall’s role at PenLife Associates is to be the go-to expert on this stuff, working alongside the firm’s Financial Planners to make sure this protection advice is properly built into every client’s overall financial plan.
As Niall himself puts it, it’s not a simple case of just picking a product off a shelf.
“Protection advice is most effective when it’s built on robust risk assessment and clear prioritisation."
“There is no one-size-fits-all solution. My role is to help clients and financial planners understand how protection fits within a wider financial plan, ensuring recommendations are practical, sustainable and aligned with long-term objectives.”
Niall’s expertise in personal and business protection means he can handle these complex client scenarios and structure the right solutions.
A perfect fit for the PenLife team
This appointment isn’t just about hiring a new person; it reflects how PenLife is growing and adapting. The firm is known for being Chartered Financial Planners, which means they are committed to a very high standard of professional advice across Yorkshire. Bringing in a dedicated specialist for protection planning reinforces this. The world is getting more complicated, and people's financial lives are too. More people are self-employed, families can be complex, and businesses face all sorts of modern challenges. This is where dedicated expertise really shines, ensuring that the firm's protection proposition is as strong as it can be.
Deborah Jacobs, a Director at PenLife Chartered Financial Planners, explained why this depth of expertise is so important.
“As client needs become increasingly complex, dedicated protection expertise is essential. Niall strengthens our proposition and supports our ability to deliver high-quality, well-structured advice that underpins long-term financial resilience.”
That phrase, "long-term financial resilience," is just a smart way of saying ‘being able to weather any storm’. By embedding Niall’s specialist skills within their financial planning process, PenLife ensures that protection isn't an afterthought but a core part of building a secure future for both personal and corporate clients.
