It’s funny how the most important jobs in the world often go on quietly in the background. Think about it. There are people in every town and city doing amazing things, not for a big reward, but just because it’s the right thing to do. In York, a group of these local heroes – the city’s foster carers – are getting a special and lasting thank you. It’s not a medal or a big ceremony, but something a bit different, something that will grow and last for years to come. The City of York Council has teamed up with Forestry England to create a living tribute in a brand-new woodland, a beautiful way of showing recognition for the incredible work they do for children and young people across the community.

A growing tribute in a green space

Ever felt like you just need a bit of open space? A place to walk, breathe, and get away from the hustle and bustle? Well, the City of York Council is on it. They’ve been developing the York Community Woodland, a massive 78-hectare site designed to give everyone in the city more green space to enjoy. That’s about the size of 100 football pitches, so there’s plenty of room to roam. But now, a special part of this woodland has been given a new purpose. It’s been officially dedicated to the city's foster carers. It’s a lovely idea, isn't it? The woodland is a place where things grow, get stronger, and flourish over time – exactly what good foster carers help children to do. This dedicated area of the woodland is a permanent nod to the safe, loving homes these individuals provide for young people who need it most. It's a wonderful piece of recognition for a vital community role.

More than just a walk in the park

So, what does this dedication actually look like? Well, there's a new plaque in the woodland, so anyone out for a walk can see it and understand the meaning behind this particular spot. It’s a simple gesture, but a powerful one. It turns a quiet corner of nature into a place of reflection and gratitude. It’s about celebrating the people who step up to do one of the most important jobs there is: fostering. The hope is that this recognition will do more than just say 'thank you'. It might just get people thinking. Imagine walking the dog or out with the family, spotting the plaque, and starting a conversation about what fostering involves. Maybe it will inspire someone to think, 'I could do that'.

Cllr Bob Webb, who is the council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, really summed it up well. He said:

“It seems fitting that we highlight the amazing work of our foster carers given their role enabling our children and young people to grow and flourish – just like the growing, developing woodland. I hope that the plaque might encourage other people enjoying the site to consider fostering as a career.”

A partnership for people and nature

This brilliant idea wasn't just down to the council. It’s a joint effort with Forestry England, the organisation that looks after the nation's forests. They manage the York Community Woodland and were delighted to be part of this project. It’s a perfect match, really. Forestry England is all about creating woodlands that last for generations, and foster carers create a legacy of their own in the lives of the children they support. This plaque and the trees around it will be there for years, a lasting symbol of the community’s appreciation. The collaboration highlights how a city can work together to honour its own. The recognition for the foster carers is deeply embedded in the natural landscape of York.

Sam Fletcher, who is the York Beat Forester & York Community Woodland Manager for Forestry England, shared his thoughts on the project:

“I'm delighted that Forestry England can help to recognise the selfless work of Foster Carers across the city. The plaque is a lovely gesture and hopefully like the trees planted here, it can be part of a lasting legacy for the families involved.”

What it means to the foster carers

Of course, the most important voices in all of this are the foster carers themselves. What do they think about having a woodland dedicated to them? As you can imagine, they’re chuffed. It’s not every day your hard work gets recognised in such a unique way. Fostering can be tough. It’s a 24/7 commitment that requires endless patience, love, and resilience. But it’s also massively rewarding. Knowing you’ve made a real difference in the life of a young person is a feeling like no other. This public recognition from the York community is a huge boost, making them feel seen and valued.

One York foster carer put it perfectly:

“Thank you for thinking of foster carers and for recognising us in this way. As Foster carers we work hard to support and care for many young people in our city. It is challenging at times but very rewarding. It is a privilege to be part of a team who put children and young people at the centre, enabling them to feel like valued members of both fostering and birth families. It would be amazing if this recognition could raise awareness and encourage more people to choose to foster.”

How a woodland grows a community

This whole story, announced on 24 March 2026, is about more than just trees and a plaque. It’s about a community showing its heart. The York Community Woodland is a fantastic asset for the city, a green space for families, friends, and everyone in between to enjoy. By dedicating a part of it to foster carers, the council and Forestry England have woven a story of compassion right into the fabric of the city. It’s a reminder that a strong community, just like a healthy woodland, is an ecosystem where everyone has a part to play and where support helps everything grow. The official recognition for the foster carers helps shine a light on the ongoing need for more people to consider fostering. There are always children and young people in York who need a stable home. And if a walk in a beautiful woodland can get that conversation started in a few more households, then that’s a wonderful thing. The project celebrates an essential part of the city's social fabric and provides a lasting tribute to the dedication of its foster carers.
