The York Station Gateway project is nearing its completion, with the final works on the highway set to transform the area around York Railway Station. Contractors, John Sisk & Son, have confirmed the timeline for these last stages, which promise to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists while creating a more pleasant public space for everyone to enjoy.

What’s Happening?

The highway works are part of a larger scheme aimed at revitalising the area around York Station. Once completed, the new layout will feature:

  • Continuous, safe cycle lanes

  • Wider footpaths for pedestrians

  • New bus stops

  • Enhanced public spaces

This work marks the end of the second package of the project (known as package 2), while other parts of the Gateway project, such as the new multi-storey car park and improvements to the station itself, are still ongoing. The final touches will also include a new loop road that will help buses move more quickly through the area.

Upcoming Road Closures

To make sure the work is done efficiently, there will be several night-time road closures. These closures are scheduled from 8pm to 6am on the following dates:

  • Monday 1 June to Thursday 4 June

  • Monday 8 June to Thursday 11 June

  • Monday 15 June to Thursday 18 June

  • Monday 22 June to Thursday 25 June

During these times, the road will be closed to vehicles but will reopen daily from 6am to 8pm, allowing access for commuters and visitors during the day.

Details on the Work

Each section of the work will focus on different areas around the station:

  1. Section 1: Night-time closures from the entrance to the Milner Hotel to the Portico will take place from 1 June to 5 June. Access for Blue Badge holders and taxis will be arranged.

  2. Section 2: From 8 June to 12 June, work will be done from the South Train Shed to near the Station Portico, including resurfacing the road.

  3. Section 3: Night-time closures will occur from 15 June to 19 June for work from the South Train Shed to Blossom Street, linking the cycle lanes into the new layout.

After these sections are completed, further night-time work will take place from 22 June to 26 June to tidy up remaining areas, and additional bus stop works are scheduled for the weekend of 3-5 July.

Why It Matters

The York Station Gateway project is significant for both residents and visitors. It aims to create a more welcoming and functional environment around one of the city’s busiest transport hubs. Councillor Kate Ravilious, who oversees transport in York, expressed her excitement about the project, stating,

“Once these final stages of the highways works have finished, there will be fantastic open spaces for everyone to enjoy, safe walking and cycling routes, and an improved road layout.”

This project not only improves transport links but also enhances the aesthetic of the area, with wider pavements and new public spaces that offer stunning views of York’s historic city walls. The improvements will make it easier for people to navigate the area, whether on foot, bike, or by bus.

Staying Informed

As the project progresses, detailed information about each phase of the work, including transport updates and diversions, will be shared to keep the public informed. Residents and local businesses have already been notified about the upcoming changes to minimise disruption as much as possible.

York is an important city for both history and transport, and the ongoing improvements around the station are set to enhance the experience for everyone who travels through it. With the completion of the York Station Gateway project, the area will be better equipped to handle the needs of modern commuters while preserving its rich heritage.
