Very spacious with lots of quality equipment, the changing rooms are large with lots of usable showers. The sauna is great and the members are respecful. However there aren't many workers around and the weights are all over the place most of the time. Would highly recommend this gym for almost anyone.
This gym boasts of a recet renovation, yet there are constantly machines with "out of order signs" and the constant presence of buckets collecting water drips from the leaky roof! It's very rare to see staff out on the floor, though I have seen one staff member tell someone to put their shirt on! I wish though they would go a little further and school people on wearing the correct attire - street clothes, crocks and sliders are not it!! I think ethos of this gym is one of nonchalance. On top of the lack of instructor presence on the floor except to to sign off checklists, now that it is getting darker earlier why are there no lights in the car park? Doesn't JD have a duty of care ensuring safety of patrons using their facilities? Don't staff utilise the same parking facilities? Is there no concern for their own safety?! The membership fees have recently increased but this gym's ethos seems to be stay invisible, except to put signs on their aging and decrepit equipment, to sign off charts and to give very little thought to customer safety or service, that is with the exception of customers booking and paying for PT services! Thinking of oing to this gym, bring your torch, nose plugs - in this day a lot of people who use this gym seem to think their lack of personal hygiene should be experienced by other gym goers, expect to hunt for weights and plates, wait for inconsiderate phone users to sit on machines texting, groups of people to accommodate a machine whilst they stand around talking! Time to go to a gym that values customers, their gym experience because JD is not it!
I have real mixed emotions about this gym. Its convenient for me because of where i live... and when i can go through the day off-peak its good. However.... my grumbles would be; - Female showers stink of urine... - There are plates and dumbells EVERYWHERE. Literally never seen anything like it - think its indicative of who is responsible when there isn't the same problem in the womens section... - Big groups of young lads - Tripod squad - sometimes cant move without ending up on someones instagram! The refurb brought the hyrox section which is great tbf, even when people are doing WEIRD things in the lanes rather than pushing sleds 🤨 Anyway - you get what you pay for 😊
So far I've only been a handful of times. I don't think I'll be keeping my membership after this first month. A lot of the equipment is in need of repair. These repairs might only be small things, but they can make a workout more of a hassle than it should be. Take the handgrips, for example. The majority of the weight machines either have mismatched grips; or a missing grip; or grips that spin when they shouldn't. Some required repairs are outright dangerous! Several of the machines have had missing weight selector pins. A few machines have loose bolts, or worn selector holes on the seats. Some need the cables readjusting. They're small things, but they add up to a very sloppy feel. Then there's the changing rooms... It's a 24hr gym, which is ideal for my erratic and unpredictable schedule, but the changing areas and showers are not 24hr. They're closed between 11pm and 5am. The sauna is also in there, so that can't be used either. 6 hours, that's a quarter of the day. This wouldn't be too bad if there were some smaller changing rooms or showers available during this time. There aren't. The place I could find is the disability access shower downstairs. This was open, but didn't smell clean. I'm not sure if this is allowed to be used outside of the normal changing room/shower hours. The toilets are also closed between those hours, again leaving only the disabled access toilet, downstairs. I went to use that, but there was water flooding out of it, soaking the carpets, and a smell to make anyone's stomach turn. I didn't use it, I went home. The ladies only section is also closed on a night. There is no mens only section. A lot of weights and weight bags seem to get left on the floor. The selection of weight machines isn't great, with only 1 of most types. There's a few pieces of equipment that I'd expected to be there, but I've not found. The vending machines don't seem to work when using mobile contactless. I'm not sure if that's my phone or not. The rope attachments are badly frayed and smell. It appears that you can only visit the gym once per day. I went twice in one day and the code wouldn't let me in the second time. Not great if you're training for something and want to have a workout before and after work. Or even if you've left your drink in the car, or can't remember if you've locked the car. Same thing for fresh air. Once you're out, it doesn't seem that you can get back in on the same day. The JD gym app doesn't seem fantastic, either. Similar gyms have the ability to see how many people are in the gym at any given time. This is great if you want to avoid the busy times, or if you prefer to work out when it's busy. Other gym apps also log how many hours you've spent in the gym that day/week/month and allow you to register and keep track of your workouts. £21.99 isn't the most expensive gym, but it's not the best value, either. Given that the gym is lacking some functionality on the off peak hours, it would be good to see a reduced rate for them. I'm going to continue using the gym for another week or so and hope that some of these issues are down to the new year's gym rush. If things change, I'll update the review. Update - The disabled toilet is now out of order meaning THERE ARE NO TOILETS! A few photos added of handgrips, missing pins, worn equipment, missing weight stickers, stripped and loose bolts etc... Visited during the day, so I managed to use the changing rooms and toilets. Needn't have bothered. Urinal overflowing with pee. Probably from all the chewing gum in it, judging by the other one. Tried reporting dangerously defective equipment, but there was no staff there at all. A cleaner came in a bit later, so I told her and asked her for an 'out of order' note putting on it. She couldn't have been less interested and actually seemed annoyed by my asking. Edit- I'm no longer a member of the gym, after trying to contact them to discuss issues, as advised by JD Gym on Twitter. They simply can't be bothered replying to you. Downgraded to one star, from two, after further issues.
Simply the best gym around Dewsbury/Batley areas. Makes other gyms look like a scrapyard. This gym is a new £2 million gym with state of the art machines. You will find most of the machines here, although I have noticed there are a few critical ones missing such as the abs toner. Has huge free car park. The best thing about being a member is the huge number of free classes you can access, with so many different times, you’ll always find a class to suit your needs. Gyms instructors are helpful and friendly. Changing rooms are decent with a free to use sauna. Lockers are available too but you have to bring your own padlock or purchase one from the vending machine on site. Price is excellent. Only £20 a month for 6 month. Can also freeze memberships for minimum of 2 months. Spinning classes are very popular and can get busy. Booking system for classes is easy to use.
