|Imagine this: a warm summer evening in a stunning historic courtyard, with two of the coolest bands on the planet about to play. Sounds good, right? Well, it's actually happening. Get ready for a massive night of music in Halifax, as two legendary bands are teaming up for a very special gig. This is not just any concert; it's a proper double headlining show, meaning a full set from both acts. A perfect night out for anyone who loves incredible live music.

Two legendary bands, one massive night
Right, let's get down to the details. On Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, American psychedelic rock icons The Flaming Lips and Scottish indie legends The Beta Band will be taking over the stage in Halifax. The venue? The absolutely beautiful, open-air courtyard of The Piece Hall. This special gig is part of the massive summer series, TK Maxx presents Live at The Piece Hall, which has become a must-see event for music fans across the country. A double headlining show means you get two main events for the price of one. It's a rare treat to see two bands of this calibre share the top spot on the bill, making it a truly unique event.
Who are The Flaming Lips?
For anyone who hasn't come across them, The Flaming Lips are not just a band; they're an experience. Hailing from Oklahoma in the USA, this American rock group has been blowing minds since 1983. Think of their music as a bit weird, wonderful, and totally unpredictable. That’s what psychedelic rock is all about – it’s colourful, dreamy, and sometimes a bit bonkers, in the best way possible. Their live shows are famous for being huge, interactive parties with confetti, giant inflatable robots, and frontman Wayne Coyne rolling over the crowd in a massive plastic bubble. It’s a spectacle. They've won three GRAMMY awards and have worked with a massive range of artists, from Miley Cyrus to The Chemical Brothers. Q Magazine even named them one of the '50 Bands to See Before You Die'. That's a pretty big recommendation.
And what about The Beta Band?
Sharing the stage is The Beta Band, and this is a big deal. The Scottish group recently got back together for the first time in 21 years, so seeing them live is a rare opportunity. They were one of the most beloved indie bands of the late '90s and early 2000s, known for mixing folk, trip-hop, and psychedelia to create a sound that was completely their own. Their music is the kind of stuff you put on and just get lost in. Though they were only together for a relatively short time, their three albums are considered classics and have influenced countless artists since. This reunion is something fans have been hoping for for ages, and getting to see them in such a cool venue makes it even better. Their unique musical style makes them a perfect match for a double headlining show with The Flaming Lips.
A massive summer of music in Halifax
This gig is just one part of an absolutely packed summer of live music at The Piece Hall. The line-up for TK Maxx presents Live at The Piece Hall 2026 is genuinely huge, with something for pretty much everyone. The promoters, Cuffe & Taylor, have pulled together an incredible list of artists. We're talking about pop favourites McFly, ska legends Madness, and indie rock heroes like Embrace and The Wombats. There are also gigs from icons like James Taylor, Deacon Blue, and the brilliant rock band Garbage. And for something a bit different, there's even Alex James’ Britpop Classical.
Nicky Chance-Thompson MBE DL, CEO of The Piece Hall Charitable Trust, said:
“What a way to end a day of huge announcements. This is a brilliant double whammy of a show, with two hugely cool and critically acclaimed bands! A rare chance to see the recently reformed Beta Band in our award-winning venue and, famed for their elaborate and visually impactful live shows, we’re really excited to see the creativity and flare The Flaming Lips will bring to the stage in this stunning heritage site!”

What's so special about The Piece Hall?
So, why is everyone so excited about gigs at The Piece Hall? Well, it’s not your average venue. It's a stunning Grade I listed building that opened way back in 1779. It was originally a place where weavers sold long rolls of cloth, called 'pieces' – hence the name. In fact, it's the only Georgian cloth hall left in the entire world. Today, its massive open-air courtyard has been transformed into a brilliant space for shops, restaurants, and, of course, incredible live events. Seeing a band here isn’t like being in a muddy field or a stuffy arena; it’s more like being at a giant party in a historic European square. It’s a truly unique setting that makes any concert feel special. The atmosphere is fantastic, a bit like an outdoor theatre for amazing live music.
Who's behind all this amazing live music?
Putting on a huge summer of gigs like this takes a lot of work. The series is presented by TK Maxx, the well-known retailer that, along with its sister brand Homesense, is part of the TJX Europe family. They're not just about offering great value on fashion and homeware; they're also committed to supporting cultural events that bring people together. The whole show is put together by Cuffe & Taylor, one of the UK’s top live music promoters. These are the people responsible for some of the biggest tours and festivals around, working with a huge range of brilliant artists. They know how to put on an unforgettable live show. So, with a legendary venue, two incredible bands, and a team that knows how to create magic, this double headlining show is set to be one of the highlights of the summer.
