Welcome to Yorkshire
News • June 15th, 2026
|Recently, the Yorkshire Wolds played host to the 10th annual Sundown 60 sportive, which attracted 320 cyclists from across the country. This popular event took place at the scenic Wold Top Brewery, known for its stunning views and welcoming atmosphere. The sportive is not just a ride; it's a celebration of cycling, community, and the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.
Challenging Route
The route for the Sundown 60 was no walk in the park. Riders faced a challenging 60-mile journey that included an impressive 3,606 feet of elevation. This meant cyclists had to tackle some steep hills while enjoying the breathtaking landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds and Ryedale. What makes this sportive unique is its afternoon start time, which allows participants to ride at their own pace and return just before sunset. This setup creates a lovely atmosphere where riders can relax afterwards, enjoying food, drink, and live music in the Brew Shed.
A Perfect Day for Cycling
David Hought, the co-founder of the Wold Top Pactimo Racing Team and organiser of the event, expressed his delight with the day.
“We were blessed with perfect weather again for the 10th Anniversary of the Sundown 6.”
Riders set off in small groups, allowing them to enjoy the rolling roads and some challenging hills at a comfortable pace. Many cyclists return year after year, highlighting the event's popularity. The option to camp overnight added another level of enjoyment, as the day didn’t just end with the ride. After the cycling, riders could indulge in delicious fish and chips from Stuarts of Driffield and enjoy a refreshing pint of Wold Top beer.
Fun and Entertainment
This year, the event featured a lively performance by the duo 'Milestone,' who played music and encouraged participants to dance the night away. With cyclists coming from all corners of the country, the Sundown 60 not only promotes cycling but also showcases the stunning countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds.
Rider Experiences
David Tough, a participant from Norfolk, shared his enthusiasm: “Loved it, 3rd time I've done it now. Well worth the drive up from Norfolk. Thank you to everyone who makes this happen!” Such feedback illustrates the strong community spirit and enjoyment surrounding the event, encouraging both seasoned and new cyclists to participate.
Supporting Local Talent
The Wold Top Pactimo Racing Team, founded by David Hought and Richard Baldwin, plays a crucial role in supporting local cycling talent. Over the years, the team has helped many riders progress to higher levels, including continental racing and professional teams. During the sportive, members of the race team were on hand to guide and marshal the riders, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Looking Ahead
Kate Balchin, the director at Wold Top Brewery, expressed her excitement about hosting the event for the tenth time:
“As keen cyclists ourselves, it’s great to know that others are enjoying the Wolds, and we loved hosting this fabulous event for the tenth time.”
The brewery not only supports cycling events but also hosts a 5 and 10k all-terrain running race each September, further promoting outdoor activity and community engagement.
The Sundown 60 sportive is more than just a cycling event; it’s a celebration of sport, community, and the natural beauty of Yorkshire. With great food, entertainment, and a chance to connect with fellow cycling enthusiasts, this event continues to be a highlight for many. As the sun set on another successful year, the anticipation for the next Sundown 60 is already building among riders and fans alike.
