Welcome to Yorkshire
News • October 19th, 2025
|Let's be honest, finding something exciting for the whole family to do on a dark winter's evening can be a bit of a challenge. But this year, a new event is popping up in North Yorkshire that looks set to change all that. The massive Swinton Estate is lighting up its grounds for the very first time with a brand-new experience called Luminescence, a winter light trail that promises a bit of magic for everyone.
Kicking off on Thursday 6th November, it looks like the perfect way to get out and about when the nights draw in.

What exactly is this winter light trail?
So, what's it all about? Imagine wrapping up warm and taking a walk through a beautiful woodland garden, but with a magical twist. The Luminescence trail is a mile-long path that winds through the lakes and gardens of Swinton Park Hotel. It's not just a few fairy lights in a tree; this is a full-on immersive experience designed to be a feast for the eyes. The entire journey is inspired by the beauty of the natural world, using light to show off the amazing landscape.
The adventure begins with a cool laser-lit welcome at the Walled Garden Gates. From there, walkers will discover all sorts of glowing displays. There's something called the Party Parade, which sounds like a lot of fun, a Woodland Grotto, and a shimmering Galaxy to gaze at. Two displays that sound particularly stunning are the Lakeside Lights, which will surely create amazing reflections on the water, and a glowing shining deer herd. It's all designed to fire up the imagination and create a memorable evening out. This is more than just a walk; it's a sensory journey through light and nature.
A magical experience for the whole family
This whole event has been put together with families in mind, creating a special atmosphere that everyone, from little ones to grandparents, can enjoy. The person behind the magic, Felicity Cunliffe-Lister, is really passionate about it. She sees it as a way to bring people together to celebrate the incredible nature found at the estate.
Felicity Cunliffe-Lister said:
"We are unveiling the Luminescence - A Winter Light Trail as an immersive experience that we hope will captivate all the family. At this truly magical time of year, the Swinton Estate is a magnificent setting to bring people together and to celebrate the beauty of nature. Luminescence is a sensory journey through light, landscape and imagination and we're thrilled to share it with our guests from early November and into the heart of wintertime."
It's clear this isn't just about putting on a show; it's about creating a genuine connection between visitors and the stunning landscape of the Swinton Estate. It's a chance to see the familiar beauty of the natural world in a completely new light. The whole experience is designed to be a proper sensory journey that sparks everyone's imagination.
What about warming up with treats?
A winter walk isn't complete without a cosy treat, right? The organisers have thought of that. About halfway along the winter light trail, there's a pit stop where visitors can grab some delicious hot chocolate and toast some marshmallows. It's the perfect little break to warm up your hands and have a chat about the amazing light displays already seen.
And if a hot drink isn't quite enough, the experience can be combined with some proper dining at the hotel. The Swinton Estate has some excellent hotel facilities, including different places to eat. Visitors could make a day of it with an English afternoon tea or book in for a traditional Yorkshire Sunday lunch. For something a bit more casual, The Terrace Bar & Restaurant offers lighter meals. It means a trip to see Luminescence can easily be turned into a full-day or evening out for the whole family.
More than just a light show at Swinton Estate
The Swinton Estate is a huge place - 20,000 acres, to be exact. That's a massive area filled with woodland and moorland, making it a spectacular backdrop for an event like Luminescence. It's a destination in its own right, attracting more than 45,000 people every year. The team there, led by Felicity Cunliffe-Lister and her husband Mark, have created loads of different things to do.
For example, the estate is home to the brilliant Swinton Birds of Prey centre, where visitors can get up close with incredible birds. There's also a cookery school for foodies and a luxurious spa for those looking to relax. Adding the winter light trail is just the latest brilliant idea to make this Yorkshire gem even more special. It shows how much care goes into creating unique experiences that celebrate the estate's connection with nature and the great outdoors.
The important bits: tickets, dates, and parking
The grand opening of Luminescence is on Thursday 6th November. This date is extra special because it's also the start of Great British Game Week, a national celebration of country living and local food, which fits perfectly with the Swinton ethos. So, the first night of this light trail is set to be a brilliant one.
Getting tickets is straightforward - they are available to book online through the Swinton Estate website. And here's a bit of good news for drivers: there is complimentary car parking for everyone visiting the trail, which makes planning the trip that much easier. All you have to do is book a spot, turn up, and get ready for an unforgettable evening exploring the magical light of Swinton.
