Welcome to Yorkshire

•Residents and staff at Greenacres Care Home in Meltham, Holmfirth, have taken part in a heartwarming initiative called the Canine Trekking Challenge to support the Dogs Trust, which is the home’s chosen charity for 2026. This nationwide fundraising effort aims to raise awareness and funds for the welfare of dogs across the country, and Greenacres is doing its part by encouraging residents to enjoy the benefits of walking while spending time with canine companions.
Walking for a Cause
The Canine Trekking Challenge is a brilliant way for the residents at Greenacres to stay active while contributing to a good cause. Throughout May, the goal is to collectively walk 1,000 miles. This initiative highlights not only the joy of walking but also the positive effects it has on both physical and mental health. Walking with dogs can be especially uplifting, as it combines the benefits of exercise with the companionship of furry friends.

A Special Day Out
To kick off the challenge, residents enjoyed a delightful trip to a local park, guided by Home Manager Sarah Tomczynski, who brought along her three friendly dogs: Pippa, Penny, and Polly. This outing proved to be a highlight for everyone involved. Resident Helen Bamforth, an avid dog lover, expressed her joy, saying, “It was such a lovely day out.” Fellow resident Pat Waite described the experience as “a wonderful morning,” while Maude Hunter noted that, although it was "hard work," the outing had done her "a world of good."
The Benefits of Walking
Walking, especially in a group and outdoors, has numerous benefits. It can boost mood, improve physical fitness, and foster social connections among participants. Home Manager Sarah Tomczynski shared her thoughts on the importance of these walks: “Walking and being out in the fresh air is great for mental and physical wellbeing, and everyone benefitted from the walk. It was wonderful to see residents enjoying time outdoors alongside the dogs and each other.”
Supporting Dogs Trust
Greenacres Care Home is proud to partner with Dogs Trust throughout 2026. This collaboration not only supports the charity’s mission but also enhances the lives of residents by promoting activity and social interaction. Residents are encouraged to participate in various activities that foster a sense of community while supporting a crucial animal welfare cause.
More Than Just a Challenge
The Canine Trekking Challenge is part of a broader commitment by Greenacres to promote wellbeing, social connection, and purposeful activities for residents. This initiative aligns with the home’s philosophy of caring for both people and animals, creating a warm and supportive environment for everyone.
Community Engagement
In addition to the trekking challenge, Greenacres Care Home is excited to continue its fundraising and community engagement activities in the coming months. The home is also currently running an introductory offer for new residents, allowing families to experience its high-quality care and vibrant activities programme for four weeks at the price of three. This offer provides a fantastic opportunity for families to explore what Greenacres has to offer, from its comfortable living spaces to its engaging activities.
