Explore The Past and Future at Peacock and Verity: Masham Sheep Fair Special Event

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on September 29th, 2024

On the 28th and 29th of September, Peacock and Verity Community Spaces opens its doors for a rare glimpse into its ongoing restoration at 15 Silver Street, Masham.

This unique space, which has housed a grocer's shop for over 300 years, will be reimagined, taking visitors on a journey through the past while highlighting plans for the future.

Experience a Victorian grocer's shop

The highlight of the event is the recreation of an 1850s shopping experience, offering a time capsule into an era before modern packaging and mass marketing.

At Peacock and Verity, guests are invited to trust their grocer, a notion that was essential for ensuring fresh and healthy food for the community in the past. Visitors will also enjoy the opportunity to purchase goods from Mr. Jared Clark and Bedale Bakery, making this experience all the more authentic and immersive.

Step into the Edwardian era

Fast-forwarding to 1915, the event will also present an Edwardian tearoom experience. The building has been painstakingly refurbished, and visitors will be treated to an elegant dining hall, smoking rooms, and accommodations, as the original proprietors, Mr. Peacock and Mr. Verity, envisioned. The tearoom, illuminated with electric light, promises an elegant atmosphere where guests can enjoy fine refreshments.

Ongoing restoration and future plans

This weekend also offers a unique opportunity for visitors to see the ongoing restoration efforts at Peacock and Verity. While the building is not yet fully open, this preview will provide insights into the ambitious plans for the space. The vision includes creating a community hub that preserves Masham's history while offering affordable housing, workspace, and an environment for visitors and locals to engage with the town’s rich heritage.

Peacock and Verity will serve as an important community asset, blending historical preservation with modern community needs, including spaces for meetings, study, and creative projects.
