Families in Wakefield are invited to join a fun-filled adventure this summer with the Summer Reading Challenge, themed "Read to the Beat." Starting on 4 July 2026, children can sign up for free at any district library and embark on a journey that combines the joy of reading with the excitement of music.

Super Sign-Up Saturday

The Summer Reading Challenge kicks off with Super Sign-Up Saturday, where families are encouraged to visit their local library. This special day aims to spark children's enthusiasm for reading right at the beginning of the summer holidays. Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, shared, “Super Sign-Up Saturday is all about getting children excited for reading right from the start of the summer holidays. We’re excited to welcome families to our libraries as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.”

What’s In Store

During the challenge, libraries will transform into magical spaces filled with music, creativity, and stories. Children will have the chance to:

  • Borrow books from a wide selection.

  • Participate in engaging events and activities.

  • Collect free incentives and rewards for their reading achievements.

As part of the challenge, children are encouraged to read six books over the summer. Those who complete this goal will receive exciting prizes, a certificate, and a medal to celebrate their accomplishment. There is even a special mini challenge for children under four, ensuring that younger readers can join in on the fun.

Celebrating Music Through Reading

The 2026 theme, "Read to the Beat," highlights the joy of music and its power to inspire and connect people. By integrating music into the reading experience, the challenge aims to show how both reading and music can evoke emotions and foster creativity. This theme is expected to resonate with many children, making reading an even more enjoyable activity.

A Long-Standing Tradition

This year marks the 27th anniversary of The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge, which has inspired countless young readers across the UK. Last year alone, over 11 million books, including audio and eBooks, were borrowed from libraries during the challenge. This impressive number reflects the significant impact the initiative has had on encouraging children to read more.

How to Get Involved
