Ever thought about climbing under a bridge? No, not to escape the rain—but as an actual climbing challenge. That’s exactly what Tom Randall, one of the world’s most creative climbers, does in his latest film, Here and There. And if you’re in Sheffield this March, you can catch it on the big screen at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF).

A Different Kind of Climbing Film

Tom Randall isn’t your average climber. Known for taking on some of the toughest crack climbs (where climbers jam their hands, feet, and sometimes whole bodies into rock fissures), he’s tackled legendary routes from the sandstone cliffs of Utah to the granite walls of Squamish. But in Here and There, he’s swapping remote wilderness for something totally unexpected: the underside of a Berlin bridge.

Sounds bizarre? Maybe. But that’s what makes this film so intriguing. Directed by George Phillips, it explores what happens when a world-class climber applies his skills to an urban setting.

“Ever since making the first ascent of Century Crack in 2011, I’ve been looking out for an offwidth that would push on world standards again,” Randall explains. “To my surprise (or maybe not that much surprise!), I was shown a project on the underside of a bridge in North Berlin – a place that, for me, is a perfect blend of creative energy, industrial brutality, and openness to new ideas and concepts.”

It’s a story about adventure in unexpected places. Can the next great climbing frontier be hiding in plain sight? And does it matter whether you’re climbing a mountain or a bridge, as long as you’re pushing limits?

When and Where to Watch Here and There

The film will premiere at ShAFF on Saturday 22nd March at 7:30 pm at Showroom Cinema. But that’s not all—after the screening, Randall and the filmmakers will take part in a live Q&A, hosted by legendary mountaineer Andy Cave.

If anyone can understand Randall’s need to explore beyond the obvious, it’s Cave. He started out as a Yorkshire coal miner before climbing some of the world’s toughest mountains, including the Himalayas. Expect a fascinating conversation about fear, ambition, and why some people feel the need to take on the impossible.

After the Film: Drinks, Music, and Climbing Chat

If you like your adventure films served with a side of good beer and music, you’re in luck. Rab is hosting an official after-party at the Showroom Café Bar, where Randall and Cave will swap climbing gear for DJ decks. There’ll be a free drink token for festival-goers, and entry is totally free.

What Else Is On at ShAFF 2025?

Beyond Here and There, this year’s ShAFF lineup is packed with inspiring films about high-altitude mountaineering, grassroots activism, and extreme sports.

  • Patagonia’s Worn Wear initiative will be on-site, offering free gear repairs—so if you’ve got a beloved but battered jacket, bring it along.
  • Thornbridge Brewery’s exclusive ShAFF Pale Ale will be flowing all weekend, the perfect pint for a weekend of adventure films.

With thought-provoking documentaries, expert discussions, and a buzzing outdoor community, ShAFF 2025 is shaping up to be a must-visit event for anyone who loves adventure.

Tickets for Here and There and the full festival programme are on sale now at ShAFF’s official website.

Why Here and There Stands Out

Adventure films often take us to far-flung landscapes—soaring cliffs, remote peaks, or deep canyons. But Here and There flips that idea on its head. Instead of chasing wilderness, Tom Randall looks for adventure in places most people wouldn’t even consider.

A grimy Berlin bridge might not seem like a natural playground for a climber, but that’s exactly what makes this film different. It’s not just about pushing physical limits; it’s about redefining what counts as a climbing challenge. Randall’s approach forces us to ask:

  • Does adventure have to mean escaping to nature?
  • What makes a first ascent truly groundbreaking?
  • How much of climbing is about creativity rather than just strength?

If you’re into climbing, urban exploration, or just love seeing people do things that shouldn’t be possible, this film is for you.

Meet the Climbers and Filmmakers

One of the best things about ShAFF is that it’s not just about watching films—you get to meet the people behind them. After the screening, Randall and director George Phillips will be there in person to talk about the making of Here and There.

  • Randall is one of the world’s top crack climbers—but even for him, this project was a mental and physical battle.
  • Phillips, the filmmaker, had the challenge of making a gritty urban setting look just as epic as a mountain range.

And guiding the conversation? Andy Cave, a man who knows a thing or two about redefining limits. From working-class roots in a Yorkshire coal mine to climbing the world’s hardest mountains, he’s the perfect person to dig into Randall’s mindset.

If you’ve ever wondered what drives someone to attempt the seemingly impossible, this Q&A is one you won’t want to miss.
