|Ever tried something for the very first time and discovered it’s a lot more fun than you expected? That’s exactly what happened on 17 March 2026, when a group of residents from Hambleton Grange Care Home in Thirsk took a special trip out. They weren't heading to the shops or a cafe; they were on their way to Northallerton Bowls Club for a completely new experience: trying their hand at carpet bowls. It was an outing that promised a bit of gentle competition, a lot of fun, and maybe even some cake.

A fun new challenge in North Yorkshire
When the opportunity for an afternoon of carpet bowls came up, the residents at Hambleton Grange didn’t hesitate. An active and engaging lifestyle is a big part of life at the home, so the chance to get out and about and try something different was too good to miss. The home’s minibus was soon filled with people buzzing with excitement for the short trip to Northallerton. For many, it was their very first visit to a bowls club, and nobody was quite sure what to expect from the game itself. They were all complete novices, ready to embrace the challenge of learning a new skill.
This kind of trip is about more than just a change of scenery. It's about community, trying new things, and keeping the mind and body active. The journey from Thirsk to the bowls club was filled with chatter about the afternoon ahead. Would it be difficult? Who would be the most competitive? The sense of adventure was clear. This outing was set to be a memorable experience, offering gentle exercise and a fantastic social opportunity for everyone involved, from the residents to the staff who came along for the fun.
The day promised a friendly competition and a perfect example of the vibrant lifestyle encouraged at Hambleton Grange Care Home. An active day out is always a brilliant way to connect with the local community in North Yorkshire, and this visit was no exception. It turned out to be an afternoon packed with laughter and new discoveries.
Learning the art of carpet bowls
Upon arriving at the Northallerton Bowls Club, the group was met with a brilliant, warm welcome that set the tone for the rest of the day. The club's President, Bernard Eland, and his wife, Joan Eland, were there to greet them. They weren't just there to say hello; they were ready to share their passion for the sport, offering helpful tips and expert guidance to the newcomers. You can imagine it’s a bit tricky when you’re a complete novice, but their friendly approach made everyone feel at ease right away.

One of the first things the residents learned is that there’s a real art to playing bowls. It’s not just about rolling a ball in a straight line. The bowls have something called a 'bias', which means they are weighted to one side, making them curve as they roll. Think about when a footballer kicks a ball with a bit of spin to make it bend around a wall – it's a bit like that. Mastering this curve is the real challenge and what makes the game so interesting. Bernard Eland and Joan Eland provided fantastic guidance, patiently explaining the technique and encouraging everyone to give it their best shot.
This hands-on instruction was exactly what the group needed. Soon, the initial uncertainty was replaced with focus and determination. This first-time experience with carpet bowls was quickly turning into a fun and engaging lesson, with the Eland duo providing brilliant hospitality and support. It was a perfect introduction to the sport, showing that you're never too old to learn a new trick or two. The challenge was on, and the residents were more than ready for it.
Laughter, competition, and cake!
Despite being complete novices, the group from Thirsk took to carpet bowls like ducks to water. It wasn’t long before the hall was filled with the sound of friendly competition and plenty of laughter. Everyone got the hang of the game surprisingly quickly, embracing the challenge with huge smiles. There were shots that went perfectly, and of course, a few that went completely sideways, but every attempt was met with cheers and encouragement. It was a fantastic atmosphere of shared fun.
All that friendly competition and light exercise is bound to make you work up an appetite. After the games, the group was treated to some wonderful hospitality. Joan Eland, showing she's as skilled in the kitchen as she is on the green, had specially baked a delicious Black Forest gateau for the visitors. Paired with a welcome hot drink, it was the perfect way to round off an active afternoon. The chance to sit down together, chat about the game, and enjoy a sweet treat was the icing on the cake, so to speak. This wonderful gesture from Joan Eland and her husband Bernard truly made the outing special.

The trip back to Hambleton Grange Care Home was just as cheerful as the journey there, with everyone sharing stories from their first carpet bowls experience. It was a day that perfectly blended activity, socialising, and a bit of indulgence – a brilliant recipe for a successful outing.
More than just a game
The positive buzz from the day was clear for everyone to see. Elaine Snowden, the Lifestyle Manager at Hambleton Grange, summed it up perfectly: “It was a great afternoon enjoyed by all – staff and minibus driver Dave included. It was fantastic to see the residents, who were complete novices, take up the challenge and have such a wonderful time.”
And the residents themselves couldn't agree more. Sheila Thornton was full of praise for the day, saying: “That has been my best trip out to date.” It’s a wonderful thing to hear and shows just how much the experience meant. Another resident, Jill Newsom, shared her enthusiasm, adding: “I have never played before and I really enjoyed it.”
This wonderful outing to the local bowls club was more than just a fun afternoon. It was a new experience that provided gentle exercise, a chance to socialise outside the home, and an opportunity to enjoy the incredible hospitality of the Northallerton community. This kind of event is central to the active and fulfilling lifestyle that Hambleton Grange Care Home aims to provide for everyone who lives there.
