|Ever fancy a night out that combines brain-teasing fun, seriously good food, and that warm feeling you get from helping a brilliant cause? Well, a farm shop in Pickering is putting on a charity quiz night that ticks all those boxes. The team at Cedarbarn is gearing up to host a fundraising evening on Friday, 20th February, and it’s all in aid of two incredibly important charities. This isn’t just any old quiz; it’s a chance for the community to come together, enjoy a classic pie and pea supper, and make a real difference.
So what's happening on the night?
Get your thinking caps on because a proper quiz night is on the cards. On Friday, 20th February, the Cedarbarn café will be transformed into an arena of friendly competition. The man with the questions will be local quizmaster and Cedarbarn’s very own Michael Kipling, who is sure to have some tricky rounds up his sleeve. It’s the perfect excuse to gather your cleverest mates and form your dream team.
And what’s a good quiz without good food? Forget a sad-looking bag of crisps. Included in the ticket price is a hearty Cedarbarn Steak Pie and pea supper. It’s the kind of classic, comforting grub that’s perfect for a February evening. The famous farm shop steak pie alone is worth coming for. Of course, there will also be a licensed bar, so you can grab a drink to celebrate a great answer or drown your sorrows after a particularly tough picture round. To top it all off, there will be a raffle with some great prizes up for grabs, giving everyone another chance to win and contribute to the fundraising total. Teams of up to four people can compete, with prizes waiting for the top two teams at the end of the quiz night. This promises to be one of the most talked-about local fundraising events of the year.
Two brilliant causes at the heart of the event
While the fun and food are big draws, the real reason for the evening is the charity aspect. The money raised from the tickets and raffle will be split between two fantastic causes that do life-changing work, both locally and nationally.
The first is Lucy’s Legacy, an organisation dedicated to raising funds for maternal mental health. It’s a subject that affects so many families, providing support for those struggling and helping to improve peri and postnatal care. The story behind this charity is one of immense community spirit. In just over a year, Lucy's mum, sister, and close friends have managed to raise an incredible £40,000. Assistant general manager at Cedarbarn, Lauren Turnbull, who organised the quiz, explained the motivation behind choosing this charity. She said, “After a busy year of hosting their own fundraising events, it's time for them to enjoy the proceeds, without the hard work of organising an event.” It’s a wonderful way to give back to a group of dedicated fundraisers who have already done so much.
The second charity is Breast Cancer Now, the research and support charity. The fundraising for this is being championed by a local lady, Jody Marton. Her connection is deeply personal, following her own diagnosis in December 2024. After finishing her chemotherapy treatment in June, Jody decided to channel her energy into raising awareness and funds. And she’s done an amazing job, raising over £18,000 through a series of creative fundraising events. These have included everything from wreath-making classes and cake stalls to a charity ball and even a tractor run, which she led in her very own pink tractor. Jody is a true inspiration, and this quiz is another chance to support her incredible efforts.
A community hub with a history of giving back
It’s no surprise that Cedarbarn is hosting this event. The Pickering farm shop has a long and proud history of supporting good causes. The team there are seasoned fundraisers, having raised over £43,000 in the last two years alone for charities like Macmillan Cancer Support and Prostate Cancer UK. They know how to put on fundraising events that are not only successful but also great fun for everyone involved.
This upcoming quiz night is a continuation of that spirit. Speaking about the decision to host another quiz, Lauren Turnbull said, “Last year’s charity quizzes were such good fun and raised so much money that we decided to do it again this year.” It shows that community and charity are truly at the core of what they do. This isn't just a business; it's a place that brings people together, whether it’s for a coffee, to buy local produce, or to take part in a quiz for charity.
