Got restless kids, muddy socks, and a week off school to fill? The Tropical Butterfly House Wildlife Conservation Park in Sheffield might just be your fairy godmother this spring half-term. From Saturday 24 May to Sunday 1 June 2025, the Enchanted Fairy Forest is back and it’s bursting with magic, mayhem, and just the right amount of mischief to keep the whole family entertained.

Let’s face it, half-term can be a bit of a juggling act. You want the kids off screens, out in the fresh air, and - if possible not moaning every five minutes. This is where the Fairy Forest really delivers. It's outdoorsy, it’s hands-on, and it’s packed with just enough silliness to charm even the most skeptical grown-up.

A woodland walk with cheeky goblins and dragons

Right, imagine this. You're wandering through the woods, and suddenly, a puppet dragon called Chomper pops out with his goblin mate. That’s Tricky the Troblin—he's up to no good (as usual). He might even pinch your socks. Seriously, keep an eye on them. Rumour has it these goblins have a thing for lonely socks, so unless you're a fan of mismatched pairs, best stay alert.

As you stroll, look out for fairy windows, tiny pixie houses, and secret dragon lairs. It’s like stepping into a storybook, but one where the fairies might actually talk back.

Hunt magical creatures and win sweet treats

Here’s where the fun kicks up a notch. Every visitor gets an enchanted trail stamp book. Your mission? Spot all the mystical creatures—fairies, goblins, unicorns, the lot. Fill your book, and boom—you’ve earned yourself a sweet treat. It’s like a treasure hunt with wings and sparkles.

And if your little ones like a bit of flair, they can come dressed as goblins or fairies. There are spot prizes for the best costumes, plus a colouring competition to get those creative juices flowing.

Don’t miss the animal antics (and bubbles!)

Every day there’s an Animal Antics show—think birds swooping over your head and adorable critters showing off. And once that’s done, stick around. The goblins aren’t finished yet. There’s a giant bubble display that’s all kinds of magical. You’ll hear the oohs and ahhs before you even see it.

Of course, there are also animal encounters and keeper talks if your lot are the curious type. It’s a good mix of learning and laughing.

Plenty more to explore beyond the fairies

Once you've ticked off the fairies, dragons, and goblins, there's still loads to do:

  • Run wild at the Camelot playpark
  • Get sandy in the sandpits or soaked in the splash zone
  • Zip down the zipwire or cruise the ride-on cars
  • Brave the Dino Trail and dig up “fossils” in the Dino Dig
  • Hop on a tractor-trailer ride through the countryside

And when tummies start rumbling, head over to the Butterfly Café or Lottie’s Coffee Lounge for a much-needed break. There’s even a quiet picnic area if you’ve packed your own.

How to visit (and save money doing it)

Here’s a handy tip. Pick up a ‘Visit and Save Card’. After paying full price for your first visit, everyone on your ticket can come back again together for just £10 per person. And if you're hooked (which you probably will be), third visits and beyond drop to £5 a head. That’s a whole lot of bang for your buck.

Just don’t forget—standard admission applies, and all the fun runs from 10am to 5pm, every day during the event. Weather might shake up a few of the outdoor bits, but there’s still plenty undercover if the skies go grey.

Part of something bigger: Love Your Zoo Week

The Enchanted Fairy Forest also lines up with Love Your Zoo Week, running from Monday 26 to Friday 30 May. This year’s theme is ‘Allies for Wildlife’, shining a light on how places like this team up to help animals survive—not just here, but across the planet.

The Tropical Butterfly House is big on this stuff. They’ve got over 142 species, including everything from butterflies to owls, and they’ve spent decades creating habitats that support British wildlife too. We’re talking wildflower meadows, bird boxes, red deer roaming free—it’s a proper nature haven.

The magic in a nutshell

So, what’s the deal? It’s a chance to:

  • See fairies, dragons, and goblins (and maybe lose a sock to one)
  • Join magical quests and win treats
  • Watch cheeky animals and goblins perform
  • Play, dig, splash, and zip all over the place
  • Support real wildlife conservation
  • And possibly, just possibly, tire your kids out in the best way

Whether you're 5 or 55, there’s something genuinely delightful about the Enchanted Fairy Forest. It’s messy, magical, and full of life. Just like childhood.
