Looking for something different to do in Sheffield this December? Here’s a round up of what’s on at the city’s museums and galleries as they get ready for Christmas and the new year. There are changes to the usual opening times so make a note before you plan your visit!

Sheffield Museums

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

  • Location: Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, S7 2QW

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is closed for winter and will re-open in Spring 2025. But they’re still running scheduled site tours and events. Check their website for updates if you want to get a sneak peek behind the scenes of this historic site.

Graves Gallery

  • Location: Surrey Street, Sheffield, S1 1XZ
  • Phone: 0114 278 2600
  • Opening Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 4pm

The Graves Gallery, with British and European art, will be closed from 22 December to 1 January. Art lovers, make sure to pop in before the break!

Kelham Island Museum

Location: Alma Street, Sheffield, S3 8RY

  • Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm
  • Sunday, 11am – 4pm

This museum of Sheffield’s industrial heritage will be closed from 23 December to 1 January. Visit before then to find out about the city’s steel history and see the mighty River Don Engine in action!

Millennium Gallery

Location: Arundel Gate, Sheffield, S1 2PP

  • Christmas Opening: Monday, 23 December, 10am – 5pm

Need a creative break? The Millennium Gallery will be open until 3pm on Tuesday, 24 December and then closed until 1 January. With temporary exhibitions and permanent collections of Sheffield’s history this gallery is a great December day out.

Shepherd Wheel Workshop

  • Location: Whiteley Woods, Off Hangingwater Road, Sheffield, S11 2YE

  • Opening Hours:
  • Until 27 October: Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 4pm
  • From 2 November: Saturday and Sunday, 11am – 3pm

The Shepherd Wheel Workshop, a restored water-powered grinding workshop, is open weekends only. Closes 23 December and re-opens 4 January. A small museum of Sheffield’s cutlery trade—a great day out for history buffs.

Weston Park Museum

  • From 4 November: Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm | Sunday, 11am – 4pm
  • Christmas Opening: Monday, 23 December, 10am – 4pm

Weston Park Museum where natural history meets Sheffield’s history will be open until 3pm on Tuesday, 24 December and then closed until 1 January. Family friendly with interactive exhibits so a great wintry weekend day out.
