It’s fair to say that being between 16 and 24 can be a bit of a balancing act. Whether it’s studying for exams, starting a first job, or just figuring things out, there’s a lot going on. Finding the time and, let's be honest, the money for things like a gym membership can feel like a massive hurdle. But what if that hurdle just disappeared? Well, for thousands of young people in Wakefield, that’s exactly what’s about to happen. Wakefield Council has announced a brilliant new scheme starting this April, offering completely free access to its Aspire leisure facilities. It’s called the Aspire Ignite membership, and it’s designed to get young people moving, socialising, and feeling good, without costing a penny.

So, what’s the big idea with aspire ignite?

The concept behind Aspire Ignite is refreshingly simple. It’s a brand-new, tailored membership for anyone aged 16 to 24 in the Wakefield district, giving them free access to a whole range of activities at Aspire leisure centres. This isn't just a gimmick; it's a significant initiative announced on 04 March 2026, aimed at tackling a real issue. Figures show that a third of young people in this age group go for at least a week without doing any exercise at all. There are plenty of reasons for this, and the council wants to remove as many of them as possible. The scheme is designed to offer a variety of fun, social ways to be active, helping to build healthy habits that could last a lifetime. This free membership is more than just a pass; it’s an open invitation for young people to explore different kinds of fitness and leisure on their own terms.

Breaking down the barriers to getting active

Why do so many people stop being active after leaving school? It often comes down to a few key things: cost, confidence, and not knowing what’s available. A standard gym membership can be expensive, and walking into a busy weights room for the first time can be intimidating. This is where the Aspire Ignite membership really comes into its own by directly addressing these barriers.

Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, explained the thinking behind the initiative. “We know that young people in Wakefield often face real barriers to being active – including cost, confidence, and lack of options. Aspire Ignite removes those barriers and opens the door to a healthier, happier future.”

She also highlighted the wider benefits, which go far beyond physical fitness. “Active young people are more likely to feel happier, perform better in education, and build habits that last a lifetime, so we want to inspire a generation of young people to enjoy healthy and active lifestyles.” By providing a welcoming and cost-free environment, the council hopes to foster a positive relationship with fitness and leisure that supports both mental and physical wellbeing, which is so important for education and training.

What activities are actually on offer?

This isn’t just about running on a treadmill. The free Aspire Ignite membership opens up a fantastic variety of activities, ensuring there's something for everyone, regardless of their fitness level or interests. Members will get access to a specific timetable of programmed sessions across the district’s main leisure facilities.

Here’s a taste of what’s included:

  • Swimming: Perfect for a low-impact, full-body workout or just a relaxing splash about.

  • Gym sessions: Access to modern equipment to build strength and fitness at your own pace.

  • Tennis: Grab a mate and a racket for a fun, social game.

  • Climbing: A brilliant way to challenge yourself, building both physical and mental strength.

  • Golf: Enjoy the fresh air and work on your swing.

These activities will be available at leisure centres across the district, including Pontefract, Sun Lane, Featherstone, Minsthorpe, Normanton and Thornes Park. It’s important to note that the free membership covers a specific programme of activities. For those young people who want unlimited access to everything at all times, the alternative Aspire memberships are still available.

Cllr Hannah Appleyard added, “A range of activities at varying times will be available across all of our Aspire leisure centres as part of the free membership including swimming, tennis, climbing, gym sessions and golf.”

Where the money is coming from

A big project like this needs proper funding, and the Aspire Ignite membership is backed by a significant investment in the community. The scheme is being funded by a £620,000 allocation from the council’s District Investment Fund. This is part of a much larger £4.3 million pot of money that is being reinvested back into the Wakefield community to provide support where it's needed most. It’s not just about leisure; the fund is designed to help people across the board.

The District Investment Fund also supports:

  • Families: £2 million to help with the cost of school uniforms and support for accessible childcare.

  • Pensioners: A one-off winter payment of £100 for those receiving Council Tax support.

  • Young People’s Futures: £100,000 to help 16 to 18-year-olds access further training and education.

  • Community Safety: £200,000 for police staff and enforcement officers to tackle crime.

This wider context shows that the free Aspire Ignite membership is one part of a bigger commitment from Wakefield Council to improve the lives and opportunities of its residents, especially its young people.

Shiny new upgrades for leisure facilities

To make the deal even sweeter, anyone signing up for the new membership will get to enjoy some recently upgraded leisure facilities. The council has been investing in its centres to make them better than ever. The Athletics Village at Thornes Park Stadium, for example, now has a newly upgraded all-weather running track and state-of-the-art LED floodlighting, which is perfect for evening and winter training sessions.

And there’s more to come. Thornes Park Stadium is also set for a £1 million indoor upgrade. The plan is to expand the gym, bring in brand-new equipment, create dedicated HYROX areas (a popular new fitness trend), and improve the changing rooms. The Normanton Leisure Centre is also scheduled for an upgrade later in the year. This means the free access offered by the Aspire Ignite membership is to top-quality facilities that are actively being improved for everyone to use and aspire in.

Cllr Appleyard summed it up perfectly: “We’re helping young people find fun, social ways to stay active — on their terms. Igniting their passion to build healthier active lifestyles, now and for the future.” This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Wakefield to get active, meet new people, and look after their wellbeing, all for free.
