|Wakefield is preparing for an exciting change in leadership as Councillor Brian Moorhouse is set to become the new Mayor of Wakefield. The official swearing-in ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 20 May, during the Council’s Annual General Meeting and Mayor Making ceremony.
Cllr Moorhouse’s Background
Cllr Moorhouse, who represents the Ossett ward, was recently elected as a councillor earlier this month. He has deep roots in the area, having grown up in Ossett and lived in Alverthorpe for over 35 years. His life experiences span various roles, starting work at the Old Roundwood Colliery in Ossett at just 15 years old. His career has taken him through jobs as a bus conductor, driver, and factory worker, and he even ran his own milk round in Eastmoor. Additionally, Cllr Moorhouse has travelled the country as a tanker driver.
A Message from the Incoming Mayor
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Cllr Moorhouse stated, “It’s a real honour to be given the opportunity to serve as Mayor of Wakefield. I’m looking forward to meeting people from across the district, hearing their stories, and representing our communities during the year ahead.”

Support from Fellow Councillors
Cllr Karl Johnson, a fellow councillor, expressed his delight at Cllr Moorhouse's nomination, saying, “I am delighted that Cllr Moorhouse is set to become our new Mayor. He brings a wealth of life experience and a strong commitment to our communities, and I know he will do an excellent job representing the district over the coming year.” This endorsement from his peers showcases the respect and confidence they have in his leadership abilities.
Deputy Mayor Announcement
Joining Cllr Moorhouse in the council leadership is Councillor Penny Ashton, who has been nominated as the Deputy Mayor. Cllr Ashton will be supported by her consort, Cllr Steven Ashton. She represents the Crofton, Ryhill and Walton ward and has been a resident of Havercroft for more than 15 years. Currently, she serves as a parish councillor and is involved in local schools and sports clubs, demonstrating her active role in the community.
The Mayor’s Role
The position of Mayor is a ceremonial title that holds significant importance in Wakefield. It was established through a Royal Charter granted in March 1848. As the First Citizen of the district, the Mayor chairs meetings of the full council and represents Wakefield at various events throughout their term. This role is not just about ceremonial duties; it involves a commitment to the community and leading by example.
Personal Life
Outside of his political career, Cllr Moorhouse is a proud father of four grown-up children and has four grandchildren. His family life adds a personal touch to his public persona, reflecting the values of community and connection that he aims to foster during his time as Mayor.
As Wakefield prepares to welcome its new Mayor, the community looks forward to the leadership of Cllr Brian Moorhouse and the positive changes he hopes to bring. With a heartfelt commitment to serving the people of Wakefield, he is ready to embark on this important journey.
