|It looks like a favourite local spot is about to get a serious makeover. Wakefield Council has just announced a massive £1 million investment to upgrade Thornes Park Stadium, and the plans sound pretty exciting. For anyone who uses the leisure centre, whether that’s for a quick workout, a weekly class, or some serious athletics training, this upgrade is set to bring some brilliant new facilities and a much-needed refresh. The entire project is focused on improving the sport and culture offering in the area, ensuring the stadium remains a key hub for the community for years to come.
So, what’s happening with the gym?
The gym is getting a complete overhaul. It’s not just a new lick of paint; it’s being expanded to create more space for everyone. Think about those times you’ve had to wait for a machine – hopefully, that’ll be a thing of the past. Along with the extra space comes a whole load of brand-new equipment. This means more choice and better-quality kit for every kind of workout. The goal is to make the gym more user-friendly and modern, providing top-tier facilities for all fitness levels. The upgrade also includes improved changing rooms, which will be converted to a ‘village-style’ layout. This usually means a more open, family-friendly space with private cubicles leading to a shared area, making it easier for parents with kids or anyone needing a bit more room. Plus, new spaces are being created specifically for additional classes and for local groups to use, making the leisure centre even more of a community hub.
Getting to grips with HYROX
One of the biggest bits of news is the introduction of dedicated areas for HYROX. If you’ve not heard of it, HYROX is a global fitness phenomenon that’s taking the world by storm. It's essentially an indoor fitness race that’s the same wherever you do it. Participants run 1km, then hit one of eight functional workout stations, and repeat that eight times. These functional workout stations test your all-round fitness with things like sled pushes, kettlebell carries, and burpees. It’s a proper challenge, but the brilliant thing about HYROX is that it’s designed for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re a pro athlete or just starting out; you can compete at your own pace. The introduction of dedicated HYROX training areas at the Thornes Park Stadium is a huge deal. It means people can get the right kind of training in, and the stadium will even start running its own HYROX classes and events later this year. This will likely bring a whole new crowd to the leisure centre and put Wakefield on the map for fans of this popular sport.
A better all-round experience
It’s not just about the big-ticket items. The upgrade will also focus on the little things that make a big difference to your visit. The reception area is being redesigned to be more welcoming, so the experience feels better from the moment you walk through the door. The corridors throughout the building are also getting a re-decoration, which will freshen up the entire place. These improvements might seem small, but they contribute to a much more pleasant environment for everyone using the facilities. When you combine this with the major gym and HYROX additions, the whole stadium is set for a significant transformation. It's all part of the plan to improve the culture around health and sport in the area.
Don’t forget the great outdoors
This big indoor upgrade follows hot on the heels of the recently completed improvements to the outdoor running track and Athletics Village. These facilities are already looking fantastic and provide a professional-grade space for athletics training. The all-weather track means it can be used year-round, which is a massive plus. The Athletics Village is packed with specialist equipment for field events, including:
A hammer cage for throwers
A dedicated shot put area
Pits for both long jump and high jump
Facilities for pole vault and steeplechase (complete with a water jump!)
To top it all off, the whole area is lit by state-of-the-art LED floodlighting. This is a game-changer for evening and winter training, allowing athletes and groups to use the space safely long after the sun goes down. This investment ensures the stadium caters to every kind of sport, from indoor fitness to competitive track and field.
What the council is saying
The person with a key role in this project is Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport. She’s clearly thrilled about the plans for the Thornes Park Stadium. On 16 March 2026, she shared her thoughts on the project, highlighting the positive impact it will have.
“I’m pleased to see work get underway to upgrade the facilities at Thornes Park Stadium. The improvements are set to make a real difference to the site and improve the facilities on offer. It’s also exciting that we’re able to bring HYROX events to the centre. It is hugely popular and being able to offer this style of training will really put Thornes Park stadium on the map. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product.”
When is it all happening?
The work on the indoor facilities is scheduled to begin later this year. As with any big building project, there will likely be some minor disruption while the upgrade is happening. However, the council has promised to communicate any changes or temporary closures well in advance so that everyone using the leisure centre can plan around it. A bit of short-term disruption for a fantastic new stadium seems like a fair trade. This is a huge investment in local sport and fitness facilities, and the end result should be a modern, exciting, and welcoming space for everyone in Wakefield to enjoy.
