Film lovers in Whitby are in for a treat as Sir Ian McKellen and Gemma Arterton bring their star power to the screen in The Critic. Starting from Saturday, 28 September 2024, the much-anticipated thriller will begin its run at the Pavilion Cinema.

The film explores the most significant decade of Lee Miller’s life. As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and male artists’ muse. Lee Miller defied the expectations and rules of the time by traveling to Europe to report from the frontline during WWII. There, in part as a reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice to the voiceless. What she captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific. Her photographs of the war, its victims and its consequences remain among the most significant and historically important of the Second World War. She changed war photography forever, but Lee Miller paid an enormous personal price for what she witnessed and the stories she fought to tell.

A stellar cast brings 'The Critic' to life

The Critic features a high-profile ensemble cast led by Sir Ian McKellen, whose legendary career has spanned roles from Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings to Shakespearean characters. McKellen is joined by Gemma Arterton, known for her roles in The King’s Man and Clash of the Titans, along with Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone), Alfred Enoch (How To Get Away With Murder), and Lesley Manville, who recently starred in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

Directed by Anand Tucker, the film is based on Anthony Quinn’s novel Curtain Call. It follows the story of Jimmy Erskine, a domineering London theatre critic who draws a struggling actress into a dangerous blackmail plot with fatal consequences. Set in the glamorous yet cutthroat world of theatre, the film delves into dark themes of manipulation, power, and the price of success.
