|The LNER Community Stadium in York has reached a remarkable milestone, having sold over one million tickets for events since it opened five years ago. This achievement highlights the stadium's importance as a hub for sports, entertainment, and community activities in the region. The City of York Council announced this exciting news on 1st July 2026, celebrating not just the ticket sales but also the positive impact the stadium has had on local residents and businesses.
Stadium Success
The LNER Community Stadium has established itself as the go-to venue for various events, drawing visitors from across the UK. It is home to both the York City Football Club and the York RLFC, which includes the Knights and Valkyrie teams. Over the years, the stadium has hosted numerous memorable matches and cup runs, bringing together thousands of passionate supporters.

Not only does the stadium host regular sporting fixtures, but it has also welcomed significant international events, including:
2021 Women’s Rugby League World Cup
2025 Women’s Rugby Union World Cup
Women’s Rugby Six Nations
Challenge Cup semi-final
Leeds United vs. Monaco
England Rugby Union open training session
These events have helped position York as a city capable of hosting major sporting and cultural occasions, showcasing its vibrant community spirit.
Community Impact
The Leader of City of York Council, Cllr Claire Douglas, expressed pride in this achievement:
“Reaching one million ticket sales is a fantastic achievement and a testament to how important the LNER Community Stadium has become to our amazing city.”
She emphasised the stadium's role in bringing people together for unforgettable sporting moments and community activities that benefit residents of all ages.
The success of the LNER Community Stadium is not just measured in ticket sales. It has also provided real benefits for local clubs and businesses, helping to foster a sense of community among residents. The council recently extended its operational contract with GLL, the management company, for an additional five years, now running until 2035. This extension is expected to further enhance the offerings at the stadium and its surrounding leisure complex.
Investments and Improvements
GLL, a not-for-profit social enterprise, has invested over £1 million into the LNER Community Stadium to improve the experience for visitors. Some of the upgrades include:
New large screens for better viewing
State-of-the-art machinery for pitch maintenance
Infrastructure improvements for broadcasting
Creation of a fourth changing room and a new training room
In addition to the stadium improvements, GLL has made significant investments across all leisure facilities in the area. This includes a £440,000 refresh of the gym equipment at the leisure centre and the introduction of a new soft play area at the Energise Leisure Centre for families in West York. More enhancements are planned for the future, ensuring that the facilities continue to meet the needs of the community.
Sustainability Initiatives
In early 2026, solar panels were installed as part of a joint initiative between the council, North Yorkshire Combined Authority, and GLL. These solar panels are already helping to lower energy bills and reduce the carbon footprint of the stadium and leisure complex. This commitment to sustainability reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues and the importance of creating greener community spaces.
