This year, York's famous Christmas market is set to introduce a trial rest day, aiming to improve access to the city centre for everyone. The decision, made during the City of York Council's Executive meeting on 12 May 2026, will see the market closed on Tuesdays throughout its operation, allowing residents and visitors to navigate the city more freely.

Rest Day Details

The introduction of a rest day means that on Tuesdays, all market stalls will be closed. However, essential access will remain open for Blue Badge holders through the Goodramgate-King’s Square-Colliergate loop. This change is designed to ease access to important city services, including banks, shops, and restaurants, which can often be difficult to reach during the bustling Christmas market period.

In previous years, the market's operation created restrictions that affected those who needed to access the city centre for everyday activities. The trial aims to ensure that people can enjoy the festive atmosphere without feeling cut off from essential services.

Security and Safety Measures

To ensure safety during the market, the council has been in talks with North Yorkshire Police and Counter Terrorism Police. The aim is to maintain a secure environment while allowing for greater accessibility. On the rest day, the city centre will operate under 'business as usual' conditions, barring any exceptional security threats. Blue Badge holders will still be able to use the designated access routes protected by temporary Hostile Vehicle Measures (HVM).

On other days when the market is open, security measures will be similar to those implemented in previous years, limiting vehicle access in certain footstreet areas to maintain safety for all visitors.

Comments from Council Leaders

Councillor Pete Kilbane, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for the Economy, expressed the importance of making York an inclusive place during the festive season:

“York is a fantastic place to be at Christmas with people coming together to celebrate the festive season and explore York and its wonderful retail and hospitality businesses.”

He acknowledged that with necessary security arrangements, some individuals had felt excluded from the city centre. The council's decision aims to balance safety with accessibility, allowing everyone to enjoy the market and the services available in the city.

Trial Implementation

The trial will run throughout the Christmas market season in 2026, which will operate from 10:30 am to 7:00 pm, six days a week. Tuesdays will be the designated rest day. The council plans to review the trial's effectiveness and gather feedback to understand its impact on residents and visitors better.

Key recommendations approved during the council meeting include:

  • Trial a 6-day Christmas Market with Tuesday as the rest day.

  • Limit Blue Badge access to the Goodramgate access loop on rest days.

  • Conduct a detailed analysis of the trial's impact early in 2027.

  • Create a planning group to ensure ongoing risk assessment and effective safety measures.

  • Fund the additional costs of temporary HVM from existing budgets.

Looking Ahead

The trial of a rest day at York's Christmas market is significant for ensuring that the festive atmosphere remains welcoming to all. By addressing accessibility concerns, the city hopes to foster an environment where everyone can enjoy the holiday season without barriers.

The council's commitment to improved access reflects a broader goal of making York a special place for everyone during Christmas. As the city prepares for the upcoming festive season, residents and visitors alike will be watching closely to see how this trial unfolds and its impact on the community.
