|York has once again proven itself as a top destination for safe and enjoyable nightlife by earning its fifth consecutive Purple Flag award. This prestigious recognition highlights the city's commitment to providing a vibrant and well-managed evening economy, making it a welcoming spot for both locals and visitors.
What is the Purple Flag?
The Purple Flag is an international accreditation awarded to towns and cities that demonstrate excellence in managing their evening and night-time economies. Think of it as a badge of honour for places that ensure people can enjoy their nights out safely. Just like the Blue Flag for beaches, the Purple Flag signifies that a city has met high standards in safety, accessibility, and entertainment.

York's Achievements
This year, independent assessors visited York to evaluate its evening offerings. They found that the city exceeded the required standards across five key areas, which include:
Safety and security measures
Accessibility of venues
Variety of entertainment options
Quality of the public realm
Community engagement
During their assessment, the assessors observed a strong presence of local policing, alongside volunteer groups such as the York Street Angels and York BID Rangers. These teams work together to ensure that everyone can enjoy their time in the city without worries. Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID and Purple Flag Co-ordinator, remarked:
“Purple Flag is recognition of the huge amount of work that takes place across York every day to make our city safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.”
Community Collaboration
The success of York's nightlife is attributed to the collaboration among various stakeholders, including the City of York Council, local businesses, North Yorkshire Police, and community organisations. This partnership approach ensures that safety is a priority while providing a lively atmosphere for all. Jen Stockwell, Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector for York Inner, stated:
“This recognition reflects the strength of our partnership approach, with police, local authorities, businesses, and volunteers working side by side to prevent crime.”
Plans for the Future
While celebrating this achievement, the organisations involved are already looking ahead. The Purple Flag report has encouraged the expansion of successful initiatives such as the Best Bar None scheme, which promotes responsible drinking in local pubs and bars. There are plans to develop more family-friendly activities and invest in improving public spaces across the city.
Efforts such as Family Friendly Saturdays and ongoing work by Night Safe Officers will continue to ensure that York remains a welcoming and safe destination for everyone. Councillor Jenny Kent, the City of York Council's Executive Member for the Environment, praised the city's ongoing success, saying:
“York offers something for everyone, from our diverse evening economy to our strong focus on safety and inclusivity.”
