Welcome to Yorkshire

|Mourners and visitors to York Crematorium will soon benefit from a new waiting room, set to open this autumn. This addition aims to enhance the experience for those attending services by providing a more accessible space with proper toilet facilities.
Details Of The New Waiting Room
The new waiting room will be located at the crematorium site in Bishopthorpe. It is designed to accommodate the needs of visitors more effectively, especially during difficult times. Currently, there is only one waiting area, which can become crowded, particularly during busy periods.
With this new facility, families and friends of the deceased will have a comfortable place to gather before and after services. The aim is to provide a supportive environment that respects the emotional nature of these visits.
Construction Timeline
Work on the new waiting room will commence on Monday, 1 July, and is expected to be completed by autumn 2026. The construction will take place outside of service times to ensure that funerals and memorials can continue without interruption. Visitors to the crematorium may notice construction workers, vehicles, and equipment on-site during this period, but every effort will be made to minimise disruption.
Start Date: 1 July 2026
Completion Date: Autumn 2026
Community Support
Local funeral directors have been informed about the upcoming changes, ensuring that they can communicate this information to families who may be using the crematorium services. This proactive approach highlights the importance of community involvement in planning and executing such significant projects.
Good service at a sad time

Councillor Katie Lomas, who is the Executive Member for Major Projects, Human Rights, Equality, and Inclusion at City of York Council, shared her thoughts on the new waiting area:
“Regular maintenance and investment in the crematorium is key to delivering a good service for residents at a sad and sensitive time. I’m glad we’re able to offer an additional, new waiting area and look forward to it opening this autumn.”
