Welcome to Yorkshire
News • June 14th, 2026
|The vibrant nightlife of York was celebrated on Thursday, 11 June, during the inaugural Best Bar None Awards. This special event, hosted by York BID, recognised local pubs, bars, restaurants, clubs, and entertainment venues for their commitment to creating safe and welcoming environments for everyone. With 26 venues receiving accreditation, the awards highlighted the hard work and dedication of businesses that contribute to a lively and secure evening atmosphere in the city.
Recognising Excellence in York's Nightlife
The Best Bar None Awards aim to promote high standards in the hospitality sector. This national accreditation scheme, supported by the Home Office and various industry partners, evaluates venues based on four essential themes: venue management, staff training and care, customer safety and welfare, and customer service and community engagement.
Sara Bull, the Events & Engagement Co-ordinator at York BID, expressed her enthusiasm for the awards:
“These awards have been a brilliant opportunity to recognise the venues and teams that consistently go above and beyond for their customers. Achieving Best Bar None accreditation is not just a tick-box exercise. Venues undergo a detailed assessment covering everything from staff training and operational procedures to customer welfare and community engagement.”
She further emphasised the importance of these businesses in making York's nightlife enjoyable and safe for all.
A Celebration of Award Winners
The awards ceremony featured a range of categories, with winners announced for their exceptional contributions to the city’s nightlife. The following venues were recognised:
Best Hotel or Restaurant - McDonald’s Blake Street
Best Entertainment Venue - The York Dungeon
Best Independent Venue - Evil Eye
Best National Venue - Slug and Lettuce, York Riverside
Best Late Night Venue - Club Salvation
Special Recognition - Circuit York
Best Overall Venue - Club Salvation
These awards not only celebrate the best venues but also showcase the collaborative efforts of local businesses and safety partners working together to enhance York’s nightlife.
Building a Safe Nightlife Together
The Best Bar None scheme is more than just an awards ceremony; it represents a collective commitment to improving the safety and enjoyment of York's night-time economy. The programme is delivered in partnership with local businesses, North Yorkshire Police, the City of York Council, and other stakeholders, all aiming to create a vibrant and successful night-time environment. Applications for the next round of Best Bar None accreditation will open in July 2026, inviting more licensed venues in the city centre to participate. This initiative encourages businesses to join the growing network dedicated to providing safe, high-quality customer experiences. Notably, accreditation is free for members of York BID, making it accessible for many establishments.
The Importance of Community Engagement
The Best Bar None Awards also underscore the significance of community engagement. Venues that participate are not only assessed on their operational practices but also on how they interact with and support the local community. This approach helps to foster a sense of belonging and safety among patrons, encouraging more people to enjoy what York has to offer after dark.
Sara Bull highlighted this community aspect:
“The businesses recognised through the scheme play a vital role in making York's evening and night-time economy safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.”
A Bright Future for York's Nightlife
As York continues to grow as a popular destination for nightlife, initiatives like the Best Bar None Awards play a crucial role in shaping a safe and welcoming environment. With the support of local authorities, businesses, and the community, the future looks promising for York's evening economy. The recognition of venues that excel in safety and customer care not only benefits those who enjoy a night out but also strengthens the community as a whole. The Best Bar None Awards serve as a reminder that when businesses and local authorities work together, it creates a thriving atmosphere that everyone can enjoy. As the awards celebrate their first year, there is excitement for what lies ahead in the coming years, with more venues expected to join the ranks of those committed to excellence in customer experience and safety.
