|Ever thought your dog had star potential? Maybe they have that je ne sais quoi that makes heads turn at the park? Well, here’s your chance to let them shine – literally – on stage! The stunning opera La Bohème, directed by award-winning Ellen Kent, is coming to Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre on 15 April 2025, and they’re on the hunt for a four-legged performer to join the cast.

Why is a dog needed in an opera?
If you’re new to Puccini’s La Bohème, it’s one of the most beloved operas of all time. Set in Paris, it tells the heart-wrenching love story between Mimi, a seamstress, and Rodolfo, a penniless poet. The production will feature gorgeous period sets, dramatic snow effects, and, of course, a dog – because what’s a Parisian love story without a little furry friend?
The role is for Musetta’s dog, a character in the opera. And no, your pup won’t need to belt out an aria – they just need to be comfortable on stage.
What kind of dog are they looking for?
Not every dog is cut out for the theatre. According to Ellen Kent, the perfect pup should be:
- Small to medium-sized
- Well-behaved (No barking at the orchestra, please!)
- Comfortable around people and bright lights
- Happy to be on stage with their owner in costume
If your pup meets the criteria, this could be their big moment!
How to apply
If you think your dog has what it takes to become the Brad Pitt or Scarlett Johansson of the canine world, here’s what you need to do:
- Send a photo of your dog to ellen@ellenkent.co.uk.
- Include your contact details.
- Provide information about your dog’s breed, height, weight, age, and name.
- Wait for a response – if your pup makes the cut, you’ll be contacted.
A director who loves working with animals
Ellen Kent isn’t new to bringing animals into the spotlight. She’s previously featured everything from horses and goldfish to a golden eagle with a six-foot wingspan in her productions. She recalls how, during a past run of La Bohème in 2023, they used a rescue dog, which ended up finding dozens of potential new owners in the audience!
“I love working with animals,” says Kent. “We’re a nation of animal lovers, and I know there’s plenty of doggie talent out there!”
More opera coming to Bradford
If opera is your thing, there’s more to look forward to! Ellen Kent is also bringing two other breathtaking productions to Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre:
- Verdi’s La Traviata – Wednesday 16 April 2025
- Puccini’s Madama Butterfly – Thursday 17 April 2025
All performances will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.
How to get tickets
Whether or not your dog makes the cut, this is an opera experience you won’t want to miss. Tickets range from £30.25 to £48.25, and you can book through the Alhambra Theatre Box Office at 01274 432000 or visit bradford-theatres.co.uk.
