Welcome to Yorkshire

|Turning 90 is a big deal. But when you've spent much of your life making music, it's only right that your milestone birthday hits the right note too. That's exactly what happened for George Marsden, a former organist, who celebrated his 90th birthday with a trip to Huddersfield Town Hall—a place where he once filled the grand hall with music.

A special birthday surprise for a lifetime of music
George, who lives at HC-One’s Greenacres Care Home in Meltham, Holmfirth, had no idea that his big day on 14 February (yep, Valentine’s Day!) would include a visit to one of the most iconic music venues in the area. The 1100-seater Huddersfield Town Hall is famous for hosting concerts, events, and—you guessed it—organ recitals.
Back when George was 14, he started playing the organ at Salem Methodist Church in Berry Brow, Huddersfield. And get this—he earned £10 a year (which sounds like peanuts now, but back then it was a decent gig!) plus an extra 10 shillings and six pence for weddings and funerals. George even managed to play for three different churches in one day—talk about dedication!
So, when the Greenacres team decided to mark George’s 90th with a trip to see the award-winning Austrian organist Stefan Donner perform, it wasn’t just any day out—it was a trip back in time for George.
Memories, music, and a personal touch
Walking into the Town Hall, George was greeted like a VIP. The resident organist even played ‘Happy Birthday’ for him—imagine that! George, who also served as the organist for the Honley Male Voice Choir from 1974, was clearly moved by the gesture. His years of musical service earned him national recognition, including an invite to Buckingham Palace for a garden party hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. Not too shabby, right?
After the performance, George couldn’t stop smiling. “It was a lovely day,” he said, thanking the Greenacres team for making it happen.
Why this day meant so much
For George, music isn’t just a hobby—it’s been a huge part of his life. And while playing the organ might seem like a niche skill, it’s one that’s brought him joy, purpose, and some pretty cool experiences over the years. Claire Wilson, the Wellbeing Coordinator at Greenacres, saw firsthand how much the day meant to him. “It was really special to see George’s face light up,” she said. “He remembered his times playing the organ at the Town Hall, and it was a great day out.”
Who is HC-One and what makes Greenacres special?
If you're not familiar with HC-One, here’s the gist: it's the largest provider of adult social care in Great Britain. Since 2011, HC-One has been running over 280 care homes across England, Wales, and Scotland. Their motto? Caring through kindness. And Greenacres, where George lives, is no different. With 64 ensuite bedrooms, a welcoming atmosphere, and a focus on person-centred care, it's no wonder Greenacres has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission.
And it’s not just about providing care. HC-One is all about helping residents lead their best lives—whether that means a cosy movie night, a gardening session, or a memorable day out like George’s.
What makes Huddersfield town hall special?
If you've never been to Huddersfield Town Hall, picture this: a massive, beautiful concert hall with jaw-dropping acoustics. It’s hosted everything from orchestras to comedy shows. But for George, the highlight is its historic Father Willis organ—an instrument with over 6,000 pipes. Yeah, it’s as impressive as it sounds.
George’s legacy in music
George’s story is a reminder that passions don’t fade with age. Whether you’re 14 or 90, the things you love stick with you. And thanks to the Greenacres team, George got to relive one of his greatest loves—music—on his 90th birthday.
So, next time you hear an organ playing in a big, echoey hall, think of George Marsden. After all, it’s not every day you meet someone who’s played for churches, choirs, and even caught the attention of the Queen.
Happy 90th, George! Here’s to many more birthdays filled with music, memories, and maybe a few more surprises.
