|Residents and staff at Greenacres Care Home are buzzing with excitement after achieving a fantastic second place in their category at the recent Meltham Scarecrow Festival. This beloved community event, which took place in May 2026, has become a highlight of the village calendar, bringing together people of all ages through creativity and fun.
Festival Fun
The Meltham Scarecrow Festival is a much-anticipated event in the village, where local residents, businesses, and organisations showcase their creativity by designing and displaying scarecrows. This year, the festival adopted a thrilling Star Wars theme, encouraging participants to draw inspiration from the iconic film series. Greenacres Care Home rose to the challenge, crafting impressive scarecrows based on fan-favourite characters, Luke Skywalker and Yoda.

Community Spirit
Creating the scarecrows was a true team effort at Greenacres. Domestic Assistant Nicola Parker led the project, with valuable support from resident Annabel Head. Their collaboration not only resulted in eye-catching entries but also fostered a sense of community and teamwork. Nicola shared her enthusiasm, saying,
“It was great fun creating Luke Skywalker and Yoda for the festival. Annabel helped with ideas and getting everything together, so it was a real team effort.”
Residents’ Experience
The festival provided a wonderful opportunity for residents to engage with their community. Many enjoyed a delightful outing around Meltham, admiring the various imaginative scarecrow displays that filled the village. Annabel Head expressed her joy, saying:
“I really enjoyed helping with the scarecrows and going around the village to see all of the entries. There were so many creative ideas and it was lovely to be part of it.”
Celebrating Achievements
Claire Wilson, the Lifestyle Manager at Greenacres, highlighted the significance of the festival for the residents:
“The Meltham Scarecrow Festival is such a special event for the whole community, and our residents absolutely loved being involved this year. Everyone was thrilled to achieve second place, and it was wonderful to see residents enjoying a trip around the village to admire all of the fantastic creations.”
