•Ever walked past one of those huge, old brick factory buildings and wondered what’s going on inside? Well, in Halifax, one of the biggest and most famous sites is absolutely buzzing with life again. Dean Clough, a massive 22-acre historic estate, has just shared some brilliant news. It’s becoming more popular than ever, with loads of businesses moving in and more people visiting for work and fun. It seems this iconic spot in Yorkshire is proving that old buildings can learn some seriously cool new tricks, especially as it’s packed with history and modern features.

From carpets to culture: what is Dean Clough?
Okay, so let's get the backstory. For anyone not in the know, Dean Clough isn't just a collection of buildings; it's a massive piece of Halifax's history. Picture this: it was once the world's largest carpet factory, churning out carpets from as far back as 1822. The 16 enormous Victorian mill buildings stretch for half a mile. But when the factory closed in 1982, the place could have just been left to crumble. Instead, over the last forty years, it has been completely transformed. It’s now a thriving place for businesses, shops, art, and food, making it a true cultural destination in West Yorkshire. Today, this diverse hub is home to over 150 businesses that employ around 3,500 people. It’s a proper success story of turning something old into something new and exciting.
The numbers are looking good
The latest update, covering the year up to March 2026, shows that things are really on the up. The amount of commercial space being used by businesses is now sitting at nearly 70%. And it’s not stopping there; with more deals in the pipeline, the team at Dean Clough reckons this could jump to around 80% in the next year. That’s a huge amount of space, considering the whole site offers over 600,000 square feet. To put that in perspective, that’s about the size of eight professional football pitches. Last year alone, deals were signed for over 46,000 sq ft of space, with another 60,000 sq ft on the way. New faces on site include NHS Community Services and Can Can Productions, alongside a bunch of new shops and places focused on wellbeing.
One of the clearest signs that things are getting busier is the car park. You might think a car park isn't that exciting, but it tells a story. The 1,300-space car park has seen a massive 37% jump in use over the last 12 months. This isn’t just from visitors; it shows a real trend of business occupiers returning to the office. On a typical weekday, the car park is now 70% full, which is a fantastic sign of increased footfall. Plus, for those with electric cars, there are high-speed EV chargers available, blending the site's history with modern needs.

A word from the person in charge
Jeremy Hall, the Chairman and Managing Director at Dean Clough Ltd, is clearly chuffed with how things are going. He points out that as more people head back to the office, what they want from their workspace has changed. It's no longer just about a desk and a chair.
“We are delighted to report increased activity at Dean Clough which has enjoyed a fantastic year of new occupation, footfall and general on-site activity. With more employers supporting workplace returns there has been a notable shift in priorities for sustainability and wellbeing, areas where Dean Clough really stands out.”
“The buildings offer sustainable, energy-efficient spaces within a vibrant, creative community and historic setting. Together, these features make Dean Clough a unique and thriving work-leisure destination and we are proud to have an incredible retention track record.”
What does the future hold?
Dean Clough isn’t sitting still. There’s an ongoing plan to keep refurbishing and improving the site, creating new opportunities for all sorts of businesses. Whether it's a single-person office or a massive 50,000 sq ft of Grade A space for a huge company, there are options. The larger offices have impressive floorplates, meaning big open-plan areas of up to 12,000 sq ft on a single level. This ongoing investment ensures that the historic mill buildings continue to offer modern, high-quality commercial space. The focus remains on creating a diverse hub that supports both work and wellbeing, making it an ideal events location for everything from weddings to conferences. With its fantastic location on the edge of Halifax town centre, just a short hop from the M62, it’s a brilliant spot for any business looking for a unique space in Yorkshire.
