Ever spotted an event that looks amazing but the price of the tickets makes the wallet wince a bit? It happens to the best of us. Sometimes, amazing events about culture and the arts can feel a bit out of reach. But the Bradford Literature Festival is doing something pretty special to change that. On 21 April 2026, it kicked off applications for its Community Access Code scheme, a plan designed to give out free tickets so that absolutely everyone in the community can get involved. This isn't just about a few cheap seats; it's a core part of the festival's whole approach, making sure literature and culture are for everybody, not just a select few.

What's this community access codes scheme all about?

Basically, it’s a way of smashing down the financial barrier that can stop people from enjoying brilliant live events. The Bradford Literature Festival has been running this scheme since it first started back in 2014. It’s a key piece of its Ethical Ticketing Policy, which is a fancy way of saying it’s committed to being fair and accessible. The whole point is to open the doors wide for people who might not normally be able to attend. Through the scheme, community groups can apply for special codes that let their members book tickets for free. Think of it as an open invitation to join one of the best cultural parties in the North. Last year alone, in 2025, a whopping 120 community groups got on board, showing just how popular and needed this initiative is. Many of these groups come back year after year because it’s their main way of experiencing the festival.

Syima Aslam, the CEO and Artistic Director at BLF, puts it perfectly:

“Our Community Access Codes offer more than just a free ticket; they are an open invitation to those who have historically felt that 'culture' wasn't meant for them. By removing the financial barrier, we're able to make sure that the transformative power of literature belongs to the entire community, not just those who can afford it.”

It’s a powerful statement that shows this festival is all about building a stronger, more connected community through shared experiences.

So, who can apply for these free tickets?

This is the best part – it’s really broad. The scheme is designed for all sorts of grassroots organisations, not just official charities. Whether it’s a small book club with a handful of members or a huge neighbourhood network with over 150 people, everyone is welcome to apply. The organisers are keen to reach as many people as possible across Bradford, Yorkshire, and the North of England. Previous attendees have included a huge variety of groups.

Here are just some of the types of community groups that can get involved:

  • Grassroots community networks

  • Cultural and faith groups

  • Learning groups and adult education classes

  • Local support services

  • Small book clubs and hobby groups

The variety of groups shows that the festival understands that a community is made up of all sorts of different people with different interests. From faith groups to informal community networks, the aim is to ensure the festival reflects the true diversity of the area. The application process is straightforward, designed to be as simple as possible so that smaller groups without lots of admin support can still easily apply for the much-needed free tickets.

It's not just about books, you know

When people hear the word 'literature', they often just think of dusty old books and quiet libraries. But the Bradford Literature Festival is so much more than that. It’s a massive celebration of stories in all their forms. The festival programme is always jam-packed with a huge range of events covering everything from music and theatre to big discussions and lectures. The cultural programming is designed to be imaginative and diverse, offering something for every single taste. Of course, there’s plenty for book lovers, with recurring themes like the Brontës and poetry, but there's also so much more.

There are events focused on world affairs, politics, and even science with the 'Global Futures' theme. For fans of graphic novels and comics, there’s a whole section called Comico. And for those who just want a good laugh, there’s always a brilliant comedy line-up. On top of that, many family events are completely free, making it a fantastic day out for everyone. This wide range of arts and culture is what makes the festival so special. And thanks to the Community Access Codes scheme and the Ethical Ticketing Policy, more people can get their hands on festival tickets to experience it all. Even without the scheme, tickets are kept low-cost, and plenty of other concessions are available for attendees, ensuring a lively and large audience for every event.

Right, how do groups get involved?

Getting involved is simple. Community groups interested in the scheme can head over to the Bradford Literature Festival website and fill out an application. Successful groups will get an email with their unique code. This code then allows their members to go online and book their tickets for the festival, which is happening from 3 – 12 July. It’s a brilliant system that puts the power directly into the hands of the community. To make sure nobody misses out on the festival programme launch later this spring, it's a great idea to sign up for email alerts on the website. That way, groups will be the first to know what’s on and can bag their tickets early.
