What To Do In Hull This Weekend Romanfest At The Museums Quarter

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on July 15th, 2025

Right, let’s be honest. Are you already wondering what on earth you’re going to do this weekend? If the thought of another trip to the park or sitting in front of the telly makes you sigh, I’ve got just the thing. Imagine swapping your sofa for a trip back to Ancient Rome, right here in Hull.

This weekend, the Museums Quarter is being taken over by a full-blown Roman army, and you’re invited to see it all. It’s called Romanfest, it’s happening on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July from 11am to 4pm, and the best bit? It’s completely free to get in. So, forget the usual and get ready for something a bit different. This is your chance to see, hear, and practically touch a piece of history.

Romanfest

See the Roman army in action

Ever wondered what it was actually like to face down a Roman soldier? Well, now’s your chance to find out, without any of the danger! The incredible re-enactment group Comitatus are setting up camp, and they’re bringing the full might of the Roman army with them. These aren’t just blokes in costumes; these guys know their stuff. They'll be putting on amazing displays of arms drills, showing everyone how a unit of Roman soldiers would have moved and fought together in perfect formation. It’s one thing to read about it, but seeing it happen live is something else entirely.

And the weapons! You’ll get to see everything from the classic swords and spears to hefty throwing axes. They’ll also be showing off some serious long-range gear. We’re talking about the javelin, the bow, and even a ballista – which is basically a massive crossbow that could skewer a chariot from halfway across a field. It’s an incredible piece of ancient engineering. The soldiers will also be chatting to visitors about what life was really like in the late Roman army. You can ask them anything, from how they were recruited to what their pay and rations were like. It’s a proper look into the daily life of the average Roman soldier, far from the glamour of the movies.

Gladiators, myths, and making stuff

It’s not all about the military, though. What’s a trip to Ancient Rome without a gladiator? The Autonomous Reenactor Collective will be staging thrilling gladiator demonstrations throughout the day. It’s all the drama and excitement you’d hope for. Plus, there are some brilliant living-history displays where you can wander around and see how Roman civilians lived their lives. You can chat with people dressed as civilians from the period and get a real sense of their world.

And if you fancy getting properly into the spirit, there's a selfie station where you can dress up as a Roman citizen or even a fearsome gladiator. You can grab some brilliant photos to remember the day – you can even make your own helmets to complete the look! For those who like getting their hands dirty, there are have-a-go craft activities. Visitors can try making their own Roman-inspired pottery or creating a colourful mosaic. There will be lots of chances for visitors of all ages to get involved. The storytelling sessions sound amazing too, with tales of the mighty Hercules and the legendary Queen Boudica’s epic battles against the Roman army.

So, what’s the story with Ancient Rome?

This whole weekend isn't just a random bit of fun; it’s part of the national Festival of Archaeology. It’s a country-wide celebration of history and the things people left behind. Events like Romanfest are brilliant because they bring history to life. The living-history displays are especially cool. They let you step into a scene from the past, talk to the ‘inhabitants’ (the re-enactors), and see how things were done. It’s about experiencing culture, not just reading about it in a dusty book.

It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone in Hull to connect with a really important part of British history. The Roman presence shaped so much of the country, and this event gives you a real, tangible feel for that time. All visitors will get a unique look at Ancient Rome, from the discipline of the soldiers to the daily life of the civilians. It’s a proper journey back in time at the Museums Quarter.

Have a go yourself

Think you’ve got a good eye? After watching the professionals show off their skills with the bow, you might fancy a go yourself. For a small fee, you can try your hand at archery. It’s a chance to see if you’d have made a decent Roman archer. It’s harder than it looks, but it’s great fun. It’s one of the few things that isn't free over the weekend, but it's a great chance to challenge your mates or family to a shoot-out, Roman style.

The official word

But don't just take my word for how good it’s going to be. Here’s what the local council has to say about it. Councillor Rob Pritchard, who is the portfolio holder for culture and leisure, is clearly excited about the event.

“Romanfest is an incredible chance to step back in time and experience the Roman Empire at the Museums Quarter. This free event promises to be a fun and educational day out for the whole family.”

He's spot on. It’s exactly that – a perfect mix of fun and learning, which is the best kind of day out, right? It’s a celebration of culture and leisure that brings the world of Ancient Rome to Hull for a memorable weekend. All visitors are in for a treat.
