Welcome to Yorkshire
Published on May 21st, 2026
•This weekend, Leeds train station will come alive with the cheerful voices of children from Martin House Children's Hospice. On Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd May, young individuals who either receive care from the hospice or have close ties to it will take over the tannoy system, sharing heartfelt messages of gratitude with the public. This unique event aims to thank the people of Leeds for their generous support in funding the hospice's new redevelopment project, known as The BUILD.
About The BUILD Project
The BUILD is a significant redevelopment project costing £21.9 million, set to officially open in June. The new facilities will enhance the support offered to families across Yorkshire during their most challenging times. Among the exciting additions is a hydrotherapy pool, which can provide therapeutic benefits to children with various needs. This project is crucial as it allows Martin House to extend its services to even more families who rely on their vital support.
Meet the Young Voices

Six children will be featuring in the tannoy takeover, each with their own inspiring stories:
Charlie (7) - He recorded a message thanking the people of Leeds for their support, highlighting how the hospice cared for his sister Evelyn, who sadly passed away at just seven months old due to a brain injury.
Ivy (8) - A bright young girl who is excited to share her gratitude.
Shailene (12) - Another child whose connection to the hospice is deeply meaningful.
Sadie (13) - Diagnosed with Cockayne Syndrome, she appreciates the respite care provided by Martin House and expresses her thanks, saying: "Welcome to Leeds Station. I am Sadie, aged 13. Because of the people from Leeds, Martin House Children's Hospice can care for more children like me. Thank you."
Leighton (14) - He has been attending Martin House since he was four years old, having been diagnosed with Aicardi Goutières Syndrome. Leighton loves visiting the hospice and his mother, Chrissie, shares how much the family benefits from their support.
Alina (18) - An older voice in the group, she has a close connection to the hospice and will also convey her appreciation.
Personal Stories of Gratitude
Each child’s message reflects not only personal experiences but also the collective gratitude of many families who have been touched by Martin House. For instance, Sadie’s mother, Jennie, emphasises how vital the hospice has been for their family, allowing them to enjoy quality time together during respite stays. She explains, “Sadie loves attending Martin House. She really likes the new building and particularly enjoys the garden and crafts area.”
Leighton’s mother describes him as a “witty, big Liverpool fan” and shares how Martin House has been a haven for their family. She states, “Without Martin House, we wouldn’t get the help and support that we need, and life would be even harder than it currently is.”
Impact on Families in Yorkshire
Martin House plays a crucial role in the lives of over 550 children, young people, and their families across West, North, and East Yorkshire every year. Their services are available free of charge, around the clock, and include planned short breaks, symptom management, and end-of-life care. The hospice ensures that families can focus on what matters most—spending time together.
Michelle Ford, the Regional and Events Team Manager at Martin House, expressed excitement about the upcoming tannoy messages: “We can’t wait to hear the children’s messages played over the speakers! They’re incredibly sweet and communicate just how grateful everyone—from the service users to the clinical staff—is for Yorkshire’s support.”
Support from the Community
The majority of the care provided by Martin House is funded through voluntary donations and fundraising efforts. The support from the local community has been instrumental in making projects like The BUILD possible. Families like Charlie's have gone above and beyond, raising over £125,000 for the hospice, ensuring that more children can receive the care they need.
Caroline, Charlie’s mother, shared her sentiments about the importance of community support: “Martin House gave us precious time together as a family with Evelyn, and because of the people of Leeds, and across Yorkshire, even more families will now get that same support in the new hospice.”
As the tannoy takeover approaches, it promises to be a heartfelt celebration of community spirit, resilience, and gratitude. Visitors at Leeds train station this weekend will be reminded of the incredible impact that a supportive community can have on families facing difficult challenges. The children’s voices will not only be heard but will also resonate deeply with everyone who listens.
