Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on January 15th, 2025

Looking for something fun to do in Halifax? From March 23rd 2025, the historic Dean Clough will host a brand-new monthly Artisan Market – and it’s shaping up to be a fantastic day out for the whole community.

If you’ve ever wandered through a local market, smelling fresh baked goods, admiring handmade jewellery, or stumbling across a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork, you’ll know how much joy these events bring. Well, Halifax is about to get its own regular slice of that magic at the iconic Dean Clough. With over 50 traders expected, live music, workshops, and plenty of food and drink, this market promises to become a staple in your social calendar.

What makes this market different?

Dean Clough isn’t your typical market venue. This isn’t a pop-up on a random car park. It’s set in a 22-acre heritage site, steeped in history and packed with character. Built between 1840 and 1870, Dean Clough was once the beating heart of Halifax’s textile industry – home to Crossley Carpets, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer back in its heyday. These days, it’s a buzzing hub for businesses, creativity, and culture.

Now, with the Artisan Market kicking off, the site is adding another string to its bow. The market is run in collaboration with RSH Artisan Markets, who already run hugely popular events in towns like Skipton, Haworth, Settle, and Bingley. Their markets are known for their focus on high-quality, handmade goods, and they consistently draw big crowds.

According to Richard Feather, who co-runs RSH Artisan Markets with his wife, Susan, demand for stalls has already been overwhelming. He said, “Our traders are queuing to become regular stallholders, and we anticipate the event will be a huge success. There will be something to spark joy for every visitor, from exquisite jewellery and bespoke homewares to delectable treats and one-of-a-kind artwork.”

What can visitors expect?

Each month, the market will bring together around 50 independent traders selling everything from handcrafted treasures to mouthwatering treats. But it’s not just about the shopping. The organisers are going all out to create a full-on experience:

  • Workshops and demos: Want to learn how to craft something yourself? There’ll be chances to meet the makers, watch them at work, and even try your hand at their skills.
  • Live music: Nothing beats the sound of local musicians playing while you browse.
  • Delicious food and drink: Whether it’s artisan bread, gourmet coffee, or something a bit stronger, there’ll be plenty to keep your energy up.

And, of course, visitors can explore everything else Dean Clough has to offer – like its six art galleries, theatre, restaurants, cafes, and quirky independent shops.

Jeremy Hall, Chairman and Managing Director of Dean Clough Ltd, said,

"Together with RSH Artisan Markets, we’ll create a warm, welcoming environment that celebrates creativity in all its forms. Dean Clough has so much to offer, from dining to beauty services, and this market is the perfect addition to our community.”

Why Halifax?

You might wonder why a historic site like Dean Clough is going down the artisan market route. Well, it’s all about celebrating local talent and supporting small businesses – something Halifax and the wider Yorkshire area are great at. Many of the traders will be local artists and makers, and even some of the businesses already based at Dean Clough will be joining in.

In fact, the market perfectly ties in with Dean Clough’s ethos of promoting independent enterprise and creativity. The site already houses over 150 businesses, from small startups to large companies like Covea Insurance. It’s also a cultural hotspot, with two resident theatre companies and a permanent art collection on display.

Why should you go?

If you’re someone who loves discovering unique gifts, meeting the people behind the products, or simply enjoying a day out soaking in good vibes, this market is for you. It’s family-friendly, community-focused, and a great way to support small businesses while enjoying everything Dean Clough has to offer.

Here’s a quick recap of what’s on offer:

  • 50+ traders with handmade goods.
  • Workshops to learn new skills.
  • Live music to add to the atmosphere.
  • Food, drink, and a chance to explore a historic destination.

Plus, it’s happening every month! So, even if you can’t make the first one on Sunday, 23rd March 2025, there’ll be plenty more opportunities to join in the fun.

A little about Dean Clough’s fascinating history

If you’re new to Halifax, Dean Clough is worth visiting for its history alone. Once home to the largest carpet manufacturer in the world, the site has been transformed into a modern hub while keeping its historic charm. Over the past 40 years, Dean Clough Ltd has invested millions into regenerating the area, turning it into a success story for Yorkshire.

With its mix of Grade A office spaces, cultural venues, and unique businesses, it’s a great example of how old industrial spaces can find a new purpose. So, while you’re enjoying the Artisan Market, take a moment to soak up the atmosphere of this iconic site.

Mark your calendars!

Whether you’re hunting for handmade treasures or just fancy a relaxed day out, the Dean Clough Artisan Market is shaping up to be something special. Grab your family, friends, or just yourself, and head down to Halifax to see what all the fuss is about.

And hey, even if you leave empty-handed (which is unlikely), you’ll have soaked in some live music, eaten something tasty, and explored a piece of Halifax’s history.
